ST: Cayden Lapcevich scores feature victory to clinch championship

The task for Cayden Lapcevich on Saturday night was simple – finish in front of Randy Rusnell to win the championship. Rusnell would draw the second place starting spot while Lapcevich would be forced to start 14^th after claiming the victory on August 30^th.

The 14-year-old would accomplish the goal at hand as he drove through the field, passing Rusnell with 10 laps to go to lead the rest of the way and score the victory, clinching his first career championship.

The night would start off with time trials to see where each of the drivers stacked up against each other as everybody would be thrown into the redraw invert. Two-time Sunset Speedway Champion Rusnell would post the quickest time in his No. 72 Marvin Freiburger & Sons Inc., Travis Industrial Maintenance Ltd., J&K Converters Ltd., Dreamdoodles.Net, Dreamdevons.Com, Cournoyeaspoodles.Com, Thor Contracting Ltd., McCordick Glove & Safety Holmar Plumming Supplies, Homes and Money.Ca, Coldwell Banker and Mortgage Alliance, Truck Trans Inc., NComm Inc., Partimers Signs Monte Carlo with a lap of 15.854 seconds, four hundredths quickest than Mike Weeda.

Come feature time, Mike Weeda would draw pole in his No. 6 Humberview Farms, Blue Giant, Goodfellow Farms, Cedar Lawn Farms, Kens Lawnmover Repair, Kenspin LTD Mustang ahead of Randy Rusnell, Coltin Everingham, Adam Martin, Chris Howse, Lane Zardo, Paul Geniole Jr., Nick Tooley, Dennis Cybalski, Donny Munce, Johnny Morrison, Tyler Liscum and Cayden Lapcevich.

Rusnell would take the lead on the early start ahead of Weeda and by lap 11, Howse was up to third while Geniole Jr. and Zardo battled for fourth. Geniole would grab the spot on lap 12, bringing Lapcevich through with him. Lapcevich would get alongside Geniole for fourth at lap 13, completing the pass a lap later. Zardo would hold down sixth ahead of Morrison and Cybalski while Martin and Bentley battled for ninth. Lapcevich would get alongside Howse for third at lap 15, completing the pass a lap later while Martin was able to hold off Bentley and Liscum for ninth. Bentley would get back beside Martin on lap 17 while Tooley headed down pit road with problems on lap 18.

As of lap 19, Rusnell still led ahead of Weeda with Lapcevich now third while Howse and Geniole Jr. battled for fourth. Geniole would complete the pass a lap later, bringing Zardo through with him. Lapcevich would continue his climb, getting alongside Weeda for second at lap 19 before completing the pass a lap later. Geniole now ran fourth with Morrison up to fifth, ahead of Zardo, Howse, Cybalski, Bentley, Martin and Liscum. Cybalski would get alongside Howse for seventh at lap 30, completing the pass a lap later and bringing Bentley through with him. Bentley would then get alongside Cybalski for seventh at lap 38, completing the pass a lap later.

At the front of the field, Lapcevich had his sights set on chasing down Rusnell for the lead. Each lap he began to eat more and more into the straightaway advantage that Rusnell held. Lapcevich would catch Rusnell at lap 38, before getting alongside him at lap 40. With nine laps to go, Lapcevich would clear Rusnell for the spot and set sail.

From that point on, it was Cayden Lapcevich as he cruised to victory in his No. 76 Tim Hortons, Troy Cove Marine, Springers Meats, Cathcard Trucking, One Promo Carz Super Stock ahead of Randy Rusnell, Mike Weeda, Paul Geniole Jr., Johnny Morrison, Lane Zardo, Donny Munce, Matt Bentley, Dennis Cybalski, Chris Howse, Adam Martin, Tyler Liscum and Coltin Everingham.
