As part of the Hoosier Spring Velocity Day 1 racing schedule, the Dickies OSCAAR Outlaws presented by London Recreational Racing would qualify ahead of Sunday night’s Lucie Alywin Memorial 53. The day full of action would see a mix of rookies and previous race winners make a trip to victory lane.
Rookie Sean Grosman would win the first heat ahead of Charlie Gallant, Tyler Hawn, Glenn Watson, Roy Passer, Todd Campbell and Jay Palumbo.
Velocity 250 winner Kevin Cornelius would win the second heat ahead of Mike Beyore, J.R. Fitzpatrick, Corey Jones, Paul Howse, Gary Passer and Mike Bentley.
The third heat would not go smoothly as Palumbo would get sideways going into one on lap four, and would be sent through the infield turn grass via contact from Beyore. Beyore would spin behind, while Palumbo came back up on the track into the path of Cornelius. The result would be front end damage to Cornelius’, in which the KDR Motorsports team was repairing to get set for the feature on Sunday. The caution would fly once again on lap seven as Hawn would grenade the motor, collecting Beyore in the aftermath. Hawn stated that he does not have a back-up so he will not be in attendance on Sunday, and is unsure of the team’s future. Past series champion Glenn Watson picked up the win ahead of Fitzpatrick, Grosman and Palumbo.
Todd Campbell won the final heat ahead of Balson, Gary Passer, Howse, Jones, Gallant, Roy Passer and Bentley.
Notably, Shane Gowan, Derrick Tiemersma and Shawn Chenoweth were in attendance, but suffered motor issues before the start of the night. Gowan is set to return on Sunday with his back-up car, but the other two drivers’ futures are unknown at this point.
Racing kicks off at Sunset Speedway at 2 pm EST. The Lucie Alywin Memorial 53 is the big event on the card, but will be joined by a 75-lap invitational for the Sauble Falls Tent and Trailer Park Limited Late Models, 50-lap invitational for the St. Onge Recreation Super Stocks, and a 35-lap invitational for the Graham Landscape Mini Stocks. There will be a pre-race on-track autograph session so be sure to come early and meet your favourite drivers.
