Entering tonight, Matt Bentley had won each of the long distance events at Sunset Speedway thus far this season. He continued the trend, scoring the victory in Saturday night’s 50-lap feature. For Bentley, this marks his third straight victory.
While Bentley picked up the win, Cayden Lapcevich finished second to be crowned the 2015 St. Onge Recreation Super Stock Champion. It marks the second straight season that Lapcevich has won the championship.
Stan Coe would win the first heat ahead of Ryan Semple, Jade Franklin, Jason Elliott, Rob Morrison, Keith Temple, Doug Harvey, Coltin Everingham and William Hughes.
Adam Martin won the second heat ahead of Matt Bentley, Cayden Lapcevich, Dwight Bell, Brendan Adams, Chris Howse, Kevin Reynolds, Randy Rusnell and Luke Gignac.
Lane Zardo won the final heat ahead of Mike Weeda, Johnny Morrison, Dan Archibald, Dennis Cybalski, Nick Tooley, Ric Watson and Candiss Everingham. The heat started off on a sour note, though, as Archibald would end up stuck on the left side door of Cybalski after close racing brought forth contact on the opening lap.
The b-main started off with Cybalski running into a mechanical issue on the second lap. Then on lap three, Tooley would get pinched between Rob Morrison and Harvey, resulting on a broken suspension part. The third caution then flew on lap four for Gignac spinning in turn four. Brendan Adams picked up the win ahead of Howse, Temple, Rusnell, Reynolds, Morrison, Coltin Everingham, Harvey, Gignac, Watson, Hughes and Candiss Everingham.
Stan Coe went for the daily double, winning the Fast Qualifer’s Dash ahead of Bentley, Semple, Lapcevich, Martin, Zardo, Weeda, Elliott, Franklin, Archibald, Johnny Morrison and Bell.
Come feature time, Johnny Morrison would start on pole behind the wheel of the No. 83 Radical Rods and Rides, Freddie’s ‘Dam Good’ Frys, Renaud Boys, JB Barns, Hot Spot, Fox’s Bakery and Deli and Brent By Kent Nova ahead of Randy Rusnell, Keith Temple, Mike Weeda, Chris Howse, Adam Martin, Stan Coe, Dan Archibald, Jade Franklin, Cayden Lapcevich, Ryan Semple, Dwight Bell, Jason Elliott, Matt Bentley, Lane Zardo, Brendan Adams and Kevin Reynolds.
The drop of the green flag would see Morrison and Rusnell battle, with Rusnell putting the No. 72 Marvin Freiburger, North Star Technical Incorporated, McCordick, HolmesAndMoney.ca, Brandt, Travis Industrial, Coldwell Banker, Partimer Signs, NCommInc., and Truck Trans Incorporated Monte Carlo into the lead on lap three.
Weeda would then get alongside Morrison for second, taking the spot on lap five with Martin following through for third. Morrison would now run fourth ahead of Temple as Howse and Coe battled for sixth. Coe would get the spot on lap nine ahead of Howse as Semple and Archibald battled for eighth. Temple would get by Morrison to move into fourth, with Coe and Bentley following suit.
Bentley would continue his climb through the field, getting alongside Coe for fifth at lap 11. He would then complete the pass a lap later, bringing Semple through with him to bump Coe back to seventh. Lapcevich would then get alongside Coe for seventh, as Martin got alongside Weeda for second with Bentley moving into fourth.
Rusnell would continue to the lead as Martin and Weeda battled for the second spot. Martin would move up into second at lap 17, as Bentley got alongside Weeda for third. Bentley would then get the third spot at lap 18 ahead of Weeda, with Semple completing the top-five ahead of Lapcevich, Temple and Coe. Bentley would then get alongside Martin for second, passing him for the spot at lap 21. Lapcevich would continue his march through the field, getting alongside Semple for the fifth spot at lap 22.
Though at the front of the field, Bentley would get alongside Rusnell for the lead, putting the No. 21 All Star Performance/Bentley Motorsports Super Stock into the lead on lap 23 ahead of Rusnell, Martin, Lapcevich, Weeda, Semple, Temple, Coe, Zardo, Archibald, Adams and Reynolds. The first caution would fly on lap 26, though, as Martin would stop in turn two with a mechanical problem. He would head down pit road to the attention of his crew, getting it fixed before returning to the track to restart at the back.
Bentley would get a good restart to keep the lead as Lapcevich now ran second while Rusnell battled Semple for third. The pair would battle till the second caution flew for Johnny Morrison spinning in turn two.
The restart would bring forth the third caution as Howse and Archibald would go around on the front stretch, with Reynolds going for the long slide sideways through turns one and two.
The second attempt went cleaner with Bentley maintaining the lead ahead of Lapcevich, Semple, Rusnell, Weeda, Coe, Zardo, Temple and Adams. The race didn’t stay green long, as the fourth caution would fly three laps later for Hughes stalling in turn four. He would be done for the event. Behind Adams with 15 laps to go, Elliott ran 10th ahead of Rob Morrison, Tooley, Martin, Gignac, Franklin, Archibald, Reynolds, Coltin Everingham and Harvey.
Bentley would get a good restart to maintain the lead ahead of Lapcevich, Semple, Rusnell and Coe as Zardo and Weeda battled for sixth. Zardo would get the spot on lap 39, getting alongside Coe for fifth a lap later. He would then move into the fifth spot with eight laps to go, with Adams getting alongside Coe for sixth. The caution would then fly with seven laps to go as Watson would go around in turn two.
Bentley would get a good restart to continue leading ahead of Lapcevich, Semple and Zardo as Rusnell and Adams battled for fifth. Adams would get the spot with four laps to go, with Coe getting alongside Rusnell for sixth.
At the front of the field, though, it was all Matt Bentley as he led the rest of the way en route to scoring the victory. Cayden Lapcevich would finish second to score his second straight track championship with no finishes worse than third on the season. Ryan Semple finished third, followed by Lane Zardo, Brendan Adams, Stan Coe, Randy Rusnell, Mike Weeda, Jason Elliott, Dan Archibald, Rob Morrison, Kevin Reynolds, Nick Tooley, Jade Franklin, Luke Gignac, Keith Temple, Coltin Everingham, Adam Martin, Chris Howse, Doug Harvey, Candiss Everingham and Ric Watson.
