Fabian Coulthard is the fastest man ever to lap Mount Panorama in a V8 Supercar – but he thinks he can go faster.
Coulthard reset the lap record late in the third practice session at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 today, lowering the mark he set in 2014.
“To go a couple of tenths quicker than what I did here last year is pretty special, and I think the way the weekend is panning out, it wouldn’t surprise me if it gets broken again,” he said.
“You get faster and faster through qualifying so I won’t be surprised if we see a quicker time than what I just posted.”
Coulthard’s 2min05.4786sec proves his Freightliner Commodore is fast ahead of Sunday’s endurance classic.
Championship leader Mark Winterbottom was 0.0998sec behind in second in his Prodrive Racing Australia Falcon, with teammate David Reynolds just behind in third.
Defending Bathurst 1000 Champion Chaz Mostert was quick, finishing fourth and only 0.0007sec away from Reynolds. Shane van Gisbergen rounded out the top five.
The Harvey Norman Supergirls pairing of Simona de Silvestro and Renee Gracie had a solid day, dropping their times in each session to set a 2.09.16 in practice three and be confident ahead oftomorrow’s action.
The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 continues Friday, with two practice sessions in the morning before qualifying in the afternoon.
