About five minutes after the second practice started, all hell would break loose as Ty Dillon would begin leaking oil, resulting in a crash that’d end up involving five other cars.
In the middle of turns one and two, Dillon began leaking oil; Reed Sorenson would slip in the oil behind him, with Ryan Newman hitting Sorenson, and then Michael Waltrip hitting Newman, followed by more chain reaction contact.
Dillon would suffer no damage to his Chevrolet as he was ahead of those making contact, stating afterwards that the spillage was caused due to a crack in the oil cooler.
“I really hate it for the guys behind us,” he said. “It’s just one of those weird situations. I couldn’t do anything different. I hate it for our guys that we didn’t get to try anything, but really hate it for all those other guys.”
Waltrip’s car would sustain heavy front end damage, resulting in BK Racing making the decision to go to a back-up car.
“I know the guys have an excellent set of tools so hopefully they can get it fixed up. If not, it’ll take a lot of Maxwell House coffee to get our back-up car ready as it is in a lot of little piece,” he said.
Kyle Larson would suffer heavy rear-end damage, resulting in his Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates team pulling out the back-up car, as well.
Ryan Newman’s team would make the decision to make repairs to Chevrolet in fixing the right front damage.
“We were just in the wrong spot in the wrong time; obviously something happened with the 95,” he said. “I just started checking up and tried to keep it off the wall, and then bounced it into it. It looks entirely fixable. I don’t know what route we’ll go, but that was Luke’s comment as we came in.”
Front Row Motorsports had a pair of cars involved, Chris Buescher and David Gilluland, but made the decision to make repairs to both cars.
Following a short delay to clean up the crash, the teams were allowed back on track where Richard Petty Motorsports’ new recruit Brian Scott topped the charts with a lap of 199.800 mph ahead of Austin Dillon, Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson and Paul Menard.
The teams will get one more practice tomorrow at 12pm EST before the Can-Am Duels.
