It seems as though Team Penske is working out the kinks with the new low downforce package as they’re quickest thus far in Las Vegas.
Brad Keselowski topped the charts with a lap of 27.646 seconds in the only practice that Sprint Cup Series teams will have on Friday. The teams had a pair of test sessions on Thursday, which were topped by Jimmie Johnson and Aric Almirola. Keselwoski is one of the three drivers that were quicker than the track record during this session.
Keselowski enters this weekend looking for his second Las Vegas Motor Speedway victory after finishing ninth last weekend.
His teammate Joey Logano was second quickest, just a mere hundreth of a second slower than Keselowski. Logano has yet to score a victory in Nevada, posting three top-10s in seven starts.
Las Vegas native Kurt Busch was third fastest after finishing fourth at Atlanta, followed by Paul Menard and Brian Vickers. Vickers returns behind the wheel of the No. 14 for Stewart-Haas Racing once again after filling in for Tony Stewart in the Daytona 500.
Kasey Kahne was sixth quickest, followed by Kevin Harvick, last week’s race winner Jimmie Johnson, rookie Chase Elliott and Ryan Newman.
Notably, there were no Toyotas in the top-10 as Kenseth was the quickest in 11th, while Ford swept the top two spots ahead of eight Chevrolets.
The Sprint Cup Series will hit the track for qualifying at 4:45 pm local time (7:45 pm EST), followed by a pair of practices on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s race.
