Following a pair of back-to-back Super Stock Championships at Sunset Speedway, Cayden Lapcevich is looking towards the next step of his racing career.
Though right now, those plans find themselves on hold due to one thing – funding.
The plans were in place for Lapcevich to run in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series full-time after running six races last season, though a departure from the team’s primary sponsor in November has put their plans on hold.
“Right now, it’s not looking good,” he offered on stage at the Motorama Custom Car and Motorsports Show earlier this month. “We’re looking to find that marketing partner to go racing full-time in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series. We’ll find out where we stand in a few weeks.”
If funding can be found, the teenager has proven that he can get the job done behind the wheel. In the six starts last year, he posted three top-10s, highlighted by a third place finish at Sunset Speedway after leading 45 laps. More impressively, he posted the ninth place finish at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park after starting at the rear due to missing qualifying as a result of other racing commitments.
The talent has also been proven on the home track level, as he finished in the top-three in each of the races last year at Sunset Speedway, en route to winning his second straight St. Onge Recreational Super Stock Championship. On top of the championship crown, he impressed in the crown jewel events, winning both the Spring Velocity and Velocity 250 at Sunset Speedway, followed by a victory in the Autumn Colours Classic at Peterborough Speedway after a back-and-forth battle with Matt Bentley.
“It was a lot of fun,” he stated. “We put a lot of hours in at the shop on the car and it all paid off at the end – with an Autumn Colours win, Velocity win and the championship.”
