On Wednesday April 6, 2016 there will be a one day only test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to test out the new superspeedway safety features to the car prior to the 100th running of the Indy 500.
The IndyCar Dallara IR-12 chassis tethering aerodynamic components is among some of the safety enhancements for 2016, along with domed skid plates and rear wing beam. The zylon tethers which are high-tensile will minimize the chance of the components coming detached from the race cars during an accident.
The rear wing and rear wheel guards will be tether for IndyCar races where the nose of the car will only be tethered for superspeedway ovals (1.5 miles or longer). Along with the rear wings Dallara has also designed a tethering system for the front wing main plane as well. The three superspeedways for the 2016 include Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway.
