After a solid top-10 finish in points last season, Jake Watson will return to Sunset Speedway to once again compete in the Graham Landscape Mini Stock division.
“I think the 2016 season is gonna be a great season,” he said. “I feel our team is going to be stronger this year than it was last year. We have had so much help from the Spira crew and a bunch of others from the track.”
Last season, Watson had a solid season en route to finishing ninth in points with five feature top-10 finishes over the course of the year.
“I’d say I had a successful year in 2015,” he commented. “Finished ninth in points and had a couple top 5 finishes. There were some ups and some downs; either it was the way the car was handling or it was with another driver on the track, but we all learn from our mistakes and that’s what makes us stronger.”
It’s why Watson feels that he’s ready to make a strong run this upcoming season as he looks to pick up where he left off from. Though he says the key this year will be focusing on their own program, rather than spending time on what other teams are doing as their own focus will be key.
If everything comes together well, the driver of the No. 88 Spira Fire Protection, London Recreational Racing, Wurth, Academy Construction, Hype Energy, Aqua Hydrate, Activate, Iclandic, Protein 2.0, Fast Eddie Race Wear, Process Group, Tomahawk Shades, Northern Ice, St. Jacobs Farmers Market, Cloverleaf Farms, Glenco, Fuel Clothing, Top Shops Gunk, Wix Filters, Lucas Oil, Race2way.ca, Fallen Tire, AR Bodies Mustang says the main goal is to get a couple feature wins under his belt.
“If I could, that would be awesome,” he added. “Also would like to go run for a championship or a top 5 finish in points in 2016.”
He knows it won’t be easy, though, as Sunset Speedway has a stacked Mini Stock division, with a range of veterans and youngers vying for the crown and victories.
“The level of competition at Sunset is pretty tough,” he commented. “There are a lot of drivers that know what there doing. A couple of the top drivers moved up this year or aren’t running full time. But the rest of the field is going to be stacked in 2016 with drivers coming up from mighty minis into the mini stock class and the drivers that are again running in 2016.”
