After a solid campaign last year, Brian McDonald is set to return to OSCAAR Midget competition this season.
“I think it’s going to be a good season,” he said. “A lot of fast cars, a lot of guys have stepped up their game and it’s going to be good.”
McDonald was solid last season, posting nine top-10s across the 13 races en route to finishing fourth in points. He’s already got his eyes on being stronger this year, working to step up his own game during the off-season.
“Well, I sent my motor in to start to get rebuilt so we hope to get a little more speed out of that,” he commented. “We had a pretty good year last year, finished fourth overall. I think we were only outside of the top-10 twice. Just have to keep consistent as consistency wins it.”
McDoanld hopes to be strong each week, but notes that he’s most looking forward to Flamboro Speedway as that’s always been his favourite track.
Though notably, this year’s championship battle will be different than last year, with the Race for the Cup elimination format in play for all of OSCAAR’s divisions.
“I think it’s kind of neat,” he said. “It’s adopted from the NASCAR series. It’s proven that it works and keeps the fans interested so why not give it a shot?”
A well-known midget racer, McDonald originally got interested in racing through his father.
“My dad used to race a car and then we raced one year together and I’ve been racing ever since,” he said.
The OSCAAR Midgets will open their season at Flamboro Speedway on May 21-22, joining the OSCAAR Outlaw Super Lates and the OSCAAR Modifieds as part of Flamboro’s big May 24 weekend. The Super Lates will run their feature on the Saturday with the Midgets and Modifieds just qualifying, with both the Midgets and Modifieds running their features on the Sunday.
