Jade Franklin kicked off his 2016 campaign on a high as he would run up front throughout the entire 30 lap feature en route to a fifth place finish at Sunset Speedway.
Franklin started off his night with a solid runner-up finish in his heat, setting him up the Fast Qualifier’s Dash. He would keep the fenders clean throughout the 10-lap affair, crossing the finish line in the seventh spot.
With qualifying in the books, the Jaded Motorsports driver would start the feature in the 11th position. He began to make his move slowly to the front, getting by Anthony DiBello for ninth at lap 11, before moving up to eighth at lap 16. The climb continued as he’d pass Herb Walters for seventh at lap 19, before the caution flew as a result of a spin in turn two.
He would avoid contact and keep his nose clean in the next two back-to-back cautions to move himself up to the fifth spot. From there on, he was able to hold off a hard charging Jordan Howse to cross the finish line fifth. For Franklin, it marks his first career top-five finish following a couple top-10 runs last season.
“I think it went pretty good,” Franklin commented post-race. “I saw a write-up that was posted going into the season that said Jade Franklin posted a couple top-10s last year, and could possibly post a top-five this year. So I figured night one we’d start it off good.”
Moving forward, Franklin says the key to continuing to run well is learning to keep his patience.
