KITCHENER – May 23, 2016 – Ryan Hunsinger dominated the Strickland’s Crate Sprint Car season opener at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday night for his first win with the Kitchener-based Durnin Motorsports team. ‘The Gunslinger’ set a new track record for a 20-lap Crate Sprint Car race in the caution-free feature.
“It feels awesome. I couldn’t be happier for the whole team. We’ve been working out butts off to get everything ready. The night couldn’t have gone any better,” Hunsinger said following the victory. “When you get a win like that, it makes all of the work worthwhile.”
After winning his heat race, Hunsinger earned the third starting spot for the main event via the redraw. He wasted little time jumping to the lead on the first corner of the first lap.
“I just wanted to get to the front. It was a bit of a drag race off the start and I kind of got my tires down in the brown where there was lots of bite. I ended up winning the drag race,” Hunsinger said of his move at the drop of the green flag.
From that point, Hunsinger left little doubt he was in control of the race. His lead was nearly half a lap in the middle of the race before he got in to lapped traffic. It took patience and a bit of experience for Hunsinger to navigate the tricky conditions.
“It was getting kind of hairy. I was a leading a race last year with two to go and I went around a lapped car on the outside and I lost the lead. When I got to the 18 car (Josh Shantz). I knew he was about as fast as it could be because it was so slick. I lapped a bunch of cars, but when I got to him I just tucked in behind him and ran around for the last couple of laps,” Hunsinger said. “I wanted to steer clear of trouble.”
Despite the dominance this week, Hunsinger believes there’s always room for improvement. Both he and car owner Jeff Durnin will be hard at work this week in search for even more speed.
“There’s always things you can do to get better. Every week we’re learning,”Hunsinger said. “This was the first race in this car, so we’re going to go over our setup and see if we can get any better for next week.”
