Following a single points night and the 50-lap Spring Velocity invitational, the drivers whom will be at the front all year are becoming clearer. With that said, fans are starting to realize whom they truly need to watch when it comes down to the final laps each week, and the final portion of the year already.
Given how things have shaken out so far, here are six drivers to keep an eye on this weekend in the St. Onge Recreational Super Stock division.
Jordan Howse
After a successful Mini Stock campaign last season, Jordan Howse made the decision to move up to the Super Stock division. Everybody knew the teenager would be fast – it was just a question of when he’d break through the first win.
News flash – it already happened as he led flag-to-flag in Sunday’s Spring Velocity presented by Hoosier 50-lap feature, holding off a very hard charging Matt Bentley and an impressive save at the end following contact with a lap car.
Now returning back to regular competition, Howse will certainly be looking to score another victory following a sixth place finish on opening night.
Speaking of Bentley, he’ll be wanting to get back to victory lane this weekend after winning the feature on opening night.
The problem is, though, as the last points night feature winner, he’ll have to start in the 14th position. Given the amount of drivers throughout this division that can win on a weekly basis, that is going to be a tough order. However, if anybody can do it, Bentley is the man as he won multiple features last season.
Going into the year, everybody had their eyes on the rookies and debating whom would be fast and whom wouldn’t.
Did anybody have Stefan Semeraro on their list? He was perhaps one of the most overlooked drivers entering the season, if you went by his Mighty Mini statistics. Last season, he won a pair of heats while posting five top-fives and 11 top-10s – but no feature victories.
He showed on Sunday he is one of those to watch all season as he posted a fourth place finish against some of the best in the province. After finishing 13th on opening night, he should be able to crack the top-10 easily this weekend.
One of the most overlooked drivers in the province, Mike Weeda caught everyone’s attention last year by scoring his first career feature victory.
On opening night, he almost headed straight back to victory lane as he posted a runner-up finish. Since getting his new car, he has been near the front on a weekly basis and shows no chance of slowing down this year.
If I was a betting person, he’d be someone that I’d be willing to lay a couple dollars down on.
After missing opening night, Johnny Morrison made his 2016 debut at Spring Velocity in style with a top-five finish.
It may be surprising to some, but it goes to show what is possible with the family-backed program. He proved that he could be quick in 2014, as well, running up front and looking like he could break through for that feature victory. Last year, though, he got off-track from being quick, running into problem after problem, resulting in posting no heat wins and no feature top-fives.
If there’s consistency and calmness in his program, perhaps there’s your darkhorse pick for a winner.
When Frank Davey made the decision to return back to the Super Stock division after running Late Models the past couple of years, it caught everyone’s attention as they knew he’d be quick. After all, he is a past series champion and feature winner, and he had gotten the car that Chad Eden drove to a victory in a Sunset Speedway 50-lap invitational during last summer.
He backed up the early season predictions on opening night, running up front all 30 laps en route to a fourth place finish. Being able to come out of the gate that strong, he could possibly pick up a feature victory early this season.
