PICTON, Ont. – May 31, 2016 – Tim Kerr put the whole package together to conclude the month of May with his first Big-Block Modified win of 2016 on Friday, May 27 at Brewerton Speedway in Central Square, NY. The Picton, Ont. native held off a late surge from the always-strong Pat Ward to claim the victory at his weekly Friday night track.
“It felt nice to get it off our chest early. Now we can just worry about getting better and racing harder,” Kerr said following the victory. “It’s a relief. After last year with a couple of good size wins, who knew if we were going to do it again?”
In the closing laps, Kerr knew Ward was marching through the field to challenge him for the point position up front. When a late caution put them side-by-side for the restart, Kerr had a plan in mind for his Bronskill Group/Home Hardware Picton No.07.
“I knew our car was good on short runs, so I knew if I could get him on the restart I had a strong shot at keeping the lead. From there it was just hitting your marks. It was only if he had a better car he was going to pass me,” Kerr explained.
Kerr’s second win at Brewerton, and first since July 3 of last season, was popular among local fans. For Kerr, the win feels like a major reward for a ton of off-season work.
“We’ve worked really hard on our Brewerton stuff the last year. Between Randy (Williamson) at Bicknell Racing Products and I, we were on the phone every Saturday toying with some ideas and building shocks,” Kerr said. “We ran the same shocks every night (last year), so we switched up how often we run the same shocks. Keeping a fresh set of shocks on is helping us.”
The weekend swing continued with Fulton Speedway on Saturday night as Kerr finished 14th in the main event. While it wasn’t the top-10 he hoped, Kerr was more than satisfied with the performance.
“It was good. We were 14th, but not a terrible 14th. It came in a little late in the race. It took 10 laps more than it should have for the right rear tire to get to temperature and start working,” explained Kerr. “I’m not disappointed with the race Saturday night. There’s no damage and the car raced good. We’ve got room for improvement there.”
Kerr will continue to race weekly this season on Fridays at Brewerton and Saturdays at Fulton. The two racetracks pose a significant challenge for several drivers with their completely different characteristics.
“It’s not like you’re at one place when you go to Florida or Charlotte and you’re there for a few days where you can tweak on it and get better. They’re two totally different racetracks to begin with,” Kerr said, adding that a completely different ride height and setup is required for each track.
As a result, Kerr is happy with the team’s progress at Brewerton and will continue to improve as he looks for his first Fulton win and consistent finishes inside the top-10. Kerr will return to action next Friday, June 3 at Brewerton before another Saturday date at Fulton on June 4.
