Coming into the historic 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Juan Pablo Montoya, driver of the No. 2 Verizon Chevrolet, was the defending Indy 500 champion. He didn’t get to contend for the win on Sunday, though.
The Bogota, Colombia native had qualified his car in 17th position for the race and through the early stages, was battling to get thru the field to make it up to the front.
“People in race cars do a lot of dumb things and we were being careful,” he said. “So I started making up some ground again and the car was actually pretty good. It was really sloppy, but it felt OK.”
Unfortunately, Montoya would not finish the race as on Lap 64 as he would make contact with the wall in Turn 2, giving him a 33rd place finish – last place.
“The car was just hard to drive and it was a little bit tighter there in that corner and it got away,” he said. “I went into (Turn) 2 with a big push and when I got on the gas it just came around. It’s just disappointing our Verizon Chevy was really good. Just a tough day.”
Next up is the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit at The Raceway at Belle Isle Park.
