It was announced on Thursday the 2015 Indy Lights Champion Spencer Pigot will join the Ed Carpenter Racing team, starting this weekend in the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit. Pigot will co-pilot the No. 20, which will be driven by Pigot at the street and road course races, and will be driven by team owner Ed Carpenter at the oval races.
“I’m very excited to be joining Ed Carpenter Racing for the remainder of the season on road and street courses,” quoted Pigot. “ECR has been very strong in 2016 and I hope we can continue to build on the success they’ve already had.”
The 22 year old made his first IndyCar race with the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team on March 13, 2016 at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, where he moved up eight spots from where he qualified to finish the race in the 14th position. He has also raced in the Angies List Grand Prix of Indianapolis as well as the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 both at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Even though he ran out of fuel and had to be towed back to pit lane, he still managed to finish the race in the 25th position.
The Orlando Florida native, will jump into the No. 20 Fuzzy’ s Ultra-Premium Vodka Chevrolet for his first time on Friday. Because the Detroit race is Double header, Pigot will race in two full races on both Saturday as well as on Sunday. He will join his ECR teammate Josef Newgarden in the duals at Detroit. Carpenter will return to No. 20 at Texas Motor Speedway which is the next oval race next weekend.
“We are really excited to be able to add Spencer to the ECR lineup and finish out the year with the 20 Fuzzy’s Vodka car at all of the races,” stated team owner Ed Carpenter. “Spencer is a definite young talent who came through the Road to Indy and we look forward to finishing the year strong with him!”
The Indy Lights Champion climbed his way up the ranks of the Mazda Road to Indy, beginning with USF2000 where he won 24 racers. He then moved up to Pro Mazda, followed by Indy Lights. In his 2015 Indy Lights season he won six races, won four poles and sat on the podium 10 times which all helped him become the 2015 Indy Lights champion. He has also earned four scholarship prizes from Mazda to keep the momentum of his racing career going to reach his goal: to make it into the Indy Car Series.
“I have to thank Fuzzy’s Vodka and Rising Star Racing for the opportunity to continue my IndyCar career this season,” added Pigot. “This weekend in Detroit will be the first time we work together, they have a lot of talented people within the team and we will try to hit the ground running. I’d also like to thank Bobby Rahal and the RLL team for giving me my first shot in IndyCar.”
