For the second race in the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit at the Raceway at Belle Isle Park, Marco Andretti, driver of the No. 27 United Fiber and Data/Snapple Honda, scored his first top-10 of the season.
The Nazareth, Pennsylvania native has had a frustrating season up to now with his best qualifying position being 12th in Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix. Then once race time hit, he’s had mechanical and pit issues effecting on-track results. Notably, before this race his best finish was 12th.
For the race, the Andretti Autosport driver would have to battle from last place, 22nd, as in qualifying he got a penalty for causing a local yellow.
At the start of the race, there was be an incident when the green flag flew as James Hinchcliffe got into the wall. Takuma Sato would spun in the after-effect and Andretti made some contact with him, hitting the left front wing.
During the first half of the race, he was near the back but as different pit strategies played out he was able to gain some positions and at the end of the race when the checkered flags flew he was in ninth position.
“It was a brutal weekend for us in Detroit,” he said. “That last yellow today helped, but we need to improve our pace. We have to settle for a top-10 and turn that into a Texas win next week.”
Up next is the Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway where in 11 starts his best finish was a podium third place finish in 2010.
