Matt Tifft’s 2016 season hit an unexpected snag on Tuesday when it was announced he would miss this weekend’s double header at Iowa Speedway due to injury.
The Hinckley, Ohio native was scheduled to drive the No. 11 Toyota Tundra for Red Horse Racing in Saturday night’s Speediatrics 200 and the No.18 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing in Sunday’s American Ethanol E15 250. According to sources, Tifft is suffering from a disc problem in his back.
2014 Iowa XFINITY Series winner Sam Hornish Jr. will make his first start of the 2016 season replacing Tifft in Sunday Afternoon’s XFINITY Series race. Red Horse Racing has not yet announced a replacement driver for Saturday night’s Camping World Truck Series race – though sources say it will be German Quiroga.
Tifft has run six of the 13 XFINITY Series races so far this season with back to back eighth place finishes in his last two starts at Talladega and Dover. He has also made three starts in the Camping World Truck Series this season with a best showing of fifth at Charlotte Motor Speedway last month.
