BRIGHTON, Ont. – June 19, 2016 – A capacity crowd at Brighton Speedway took in an action-packed night that saw 78 cars sign-in for night seven of the 2016 season presented by Vanderlaan Building Products and Belleville Nissan. Fans witnessed a spectacular finish in the Pro Late Model feature with a last lap pass deciding the winner while the Southern Ontario Sprints made their second appearance of the season.
Brown Claims Second Straight Win At Brighton
Mitch Brown used a lap eight pass in traffic to slide under Jamie Turner in turn three for the lead and paced the final 17 laps on the way to his second win of the season at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night. The Brantford, Ont. native stated fourth for the 25-lap main event, but quickly jumped to second behind Turner.
When the leaders caught the tail of the field on a very slick racetrack where the cushion was the fastest lane, Turner had to slow behind a pair of lapped cars battling side-by-side for position. Brown found a hole at the bottom of the track to run to the inside of Turner and took the lead.
Brown’s effort was slowed two laps later when Mike Ferrell spun in turn two on lap nine, the first of three cautions in the race. Turner couldn’t maintain pace with Brown when racing resumed as the latter held a lead of 2.5 seconds at the halfway point. It was all for not, however, as the second yellow of the night slowed the race on lap 14.
Naida made the most of the second restart, jumping to the bottom lane in turn one and sliding in front of Turner at the exit of turn two to claim second. Brown’s lead was erased once more on lap 15 when Rick Wilson spun to a stop off the top of turn four.
The final restart with 10 laps to go offered Naida his best chance at the lead, but he could not challenge a flawless Brown. The No.10 navigated lapped traffic perfectly and went to victory lane 1.6 seconds ahead of the Michigan native. Jamie Turner held off his son, Ryan Turner, for the final spot on the podium while Glenn Styres completed the top-five.
Turner Wins Pro Late Model Thriller
Adam Turner (No.92 Village Variety) won his second Vanderlaan Building Products Pro Late Model feature of the season with a thrilling last lap pass by Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Bellevue Fabricating) exiting turn four to claim the win.
The race started with Turner on the outside of row two behind polesitter Andy Mayhew (No.1 A&A Haulage) and Kyle Sopaz (No.12 Lots & Lines). Sopaz claimed the lead early on while Turner drove to second on the opening lap. The top two drivers broke away from the rest of the field while Sandercock navigated his way to third on lap five.
Lap 12 produced a side-by-side battle for the lead between Sopaz and Turner, with Turner eventually claiming the point in the bottom lane exiting turn two on lap 13. At the halfway point, Turner led Sopaz, Sandercock, Brandon Mowat (No.46 Target Fabrication) and Adam Nayler (No.42 Quinte West Tire).
On the 18th lap, Sandercock executed a perfect slidejob on Sopaz to take the second spot and set out to track down Turner who held a lead of 1.5 seconds. As Turner navigated through lapped traffic, Sandercock caught his No.92 with seven laps remaining. A Phil Potts spin in turn three on lap 26 caused the only caution of the race and created a four-lap dash to the finish.
With Turner restarting on the top and Sandercock on the bottom, neither driver relented. As they took the two-to-go signal, Sandercock entered turn one low and slid up in front of Turner. Turner, however, drove to the bottom and maintained the bottom. The two drivers exchanged the lead with slide jobs twice more, before Turner maintained the top lane exiting turn four on the final lap to claim the victory in a thriller that had the crowd on its feet. Sopaz, Nayler and Mowat completed the top-five.
Hennessy Claims Third Win
Andrew Hennessy (No.87 Custom Automotive) gave himself a birthday present with his third victory of the season in Bainer’s OilGARD Canadian Modified action. The seventh-starting Hennessy passed Dan Insley (No.28 Ball Machine) and Derek Bowers (No.03 Morton’s Crane Rental) on a lap two restart and led the remaining 23 circuits to earn the win.
The race started with Insley and rookie Shelby Mills (No.78 ABC Taxi) on the front row. Insley led the opening lap before a caution on lap two involving Doug O’Blenis (No.32 John’s Car Care) and Adam Whaley (No.12 John’s Equipment). After O’Blenis spun at the top of turn one, Whaley made contact as he tried to spin and avoid htting the No.32. Damage to O’Blenis car was too severe to continue.
Hennessy took the lead on the restart while Bloomfield native Dan Ferguson (No.11 Kilmarnock Enterprise) drove to second. Ferguson, however, trailed Hennessy by 2.5 seconds on lap 10. The gap widened to 4.9 seconds on lap 17 as Hennessy led by a full straightaway, but a stopped Bowers in turn two eliminated the advantage with eight laps to go.
Hennessy was strong on the restart, but so too was his younger brother, Josh Hennessy (No.88 A&A Haulage), used the top lane to rally to the second spot on lap 19 after restarting fourth.
Josh set out to track down his older brother and was poised to challenge for his first win, but the top lane appeared to fall away over the final laps as Andrew claimed the checkered flag. Kraig Handley (No.91 Tri-Canadian Energy) used the top lane to work past Ferguson for third on the final lap while Derrick Greig (No.48 Greig Truck & Trailer) completed the running order.
Ramsay Scores Third Pro Stock Win
Justin Ramsay (No.03 Empey Tire) was a man on a mission looking to improve on a second-place finish from one week earlier. The driver dubbed the ‘Rossmore Rocket” was just that, leading the final 14 laps of the 25-lap main event in round two of the Larry’s Towing Triple Crown and taking the checkered flag for the third time this season.
Polesitter Brandon Murrell (No.19 Hannah Motors) and second starter Wade Purchase (No.53 Independent Starter and Alternator) paced the field early on. Ramsay, who started 10th, was in second by lap five and caught the leader Murrell on lap 10. The two drivers led by a straightaway until the only caution of the race for a spun Rich Sanders (No.29 Orange Motorsports) in turn four.
Ramsay used the restart to his advantage. Murrell raced side-by-side with the point leader for two laps before Ramsay pulled away to a straightaway lead with two laps to go. Murrell ran second comfortably ahead of Doug Anderson (No.72 Hunt’s Landscape Service) at the checkered flag. Rookie Austin Reid (No.85 Kids R Kool) and Purchase rounded out the top-five.
Josh French Wins First Career Feature
Trenton native Josh French (No.08) became the second French brother to go to victory lane this season, doing so for the first time in his career in Bill’s Johns Comp 4 competition.
Glenn Hamer (No.27) and Bella Cosstick (No.24 Off The Hook) paced the field to the green flag. Hamer led until a lap two caution for debris. When the initial restart was called back as Hamer jumped early, French took advantage and led the next lap.
He drove away from the field while his brother, Tyler French (No.0 Empey Tire) battled three-wide for second on lap 10 and 11 with Matthew Moore (No.14 Farl’s Auto Body) and Peter Moore (No.17 Sherry’s Pet Grooming). Matthew Moore took the second position and appeared to be gaining on the race leader, but ran out of time as Josh French cruised claimed his first career win. Peter Moore, Tyler French and Adam Flieler (No.11 Double D Sports Bar) completed the top-five.

The Go Nuclear Late Model Series makes the first of two appearances next Saturday night for the 50-lap, $1500-to-win Schools Out Shootout presented by Deerhaven Farm and Garden and Campbellford Chrysler. The Bainer’s OilGARD Canadian Modifieds, Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks and Quinte Septic Stingers are all in action. The Bill’s Johns Comp 4s compete in round two of the ABC Taxi Triple Crown.
