TRENTON, Ont. (June 21, 2016) – Charlie Sandercock turned in his seventh straight top-five finish with a runner-up result following a battle to remember with Adam Turner over the final four laps.
The Trenton driver lined-up fifth for 30-lap main event and quickly made his way forward. Sandercock ran third at the halfway point before taking the second position from Kyle Sopaz on lap 23.
“It was a fast outside line. We’re still picking at tuning on the car to get it as best we can. We’re getting happier with it every time we go out on the racetrack,” Sandercock said. “When we were running second, I was just picking my lines and trying to figure out what I was going to do to make the pass on Turner.”
A caution on lap 26 changed the equation and gave Sandercock a chance at the lead. Turner chose the top lane for the restart and the two drivers raced side-by-side for two laps. With two laps to go, Sandercock tried a slide job in turns one and two to take the lead and did so successfully. Turner returned the favour in turn three before the two drivers swapped the lead again on the final lap. Turner ultimately rode the top lane to the victory.
“Racing side-by-side with Adam, crossing over, slide jobs like we did for three laps and back and forth at each end of the racetrack was cool. Neither one of us made contact or ruffled any feathers. It was a good show. I know we enjoyed it as drivers from where we were sitting, so the fans must have enjoyed it,” Sandercock commented with a smile.
“You don’t see that everyday. You might see one slide job and then carry on. To have it crossover at the other end of the track and for two laps straight is pretty entertaining. Two guys pulled it off running right for the checkered,” Sandercock added.
After the thrilling race, Sandercock now sits alone at the top of the championship standings with a 35-point advantage over Turner. His focus, however, changes to the Go Nuclear Late Model Series, which invades Brighton this week.
“I’m looking forward to the race this weekend. Hopefully we can pull off a top-five like we have been doing at Brighton,” he added. “We want to be consistent and come home with no damage. We’d like to pick up some more points because we’ve only had one points night (with the series).”
Sandercock also knows the time trial event changes the playing field a bit from a regular Saturday night event at Brighton.
“We’ll be a little bit more prepared for a heavier track at the beginning of the night than we normally would be just knowing the track is going to have traction in it right off the go. We need to set down a quick time in order to qualify well,” Sandercock added.
Hot laps and time trials for the Go Nuclear Late Model Series event at Brighton Speedway begin at 6:00pm. Race time is 7:00pm. Find more information at www.gonuclearlatemodelseries.com andwww.brightonspeedway.com.
