Sonoma Raceway always provides a few surprises throughout a race weekend. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the weekend took place in final Sprint Cup practice as Dale Earnhardt Jr. led the way in the final practice session ahead of Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350.
Earnhardt Jr. ran a fast lap of 75.175 seconds (95.298 MPH). Earnhardt was just ,034 seconds ahead of Casey Mears at the end of the one hour and 25 minute practice session.
Denny Hamlin was third followed by his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch rounding out the top five.
Jamie McMurray was sixth followed by: Brad Keselowski, Matt Kenseth, Kasey Kahne, and Martin Truex Jr. rounded out the top ten.
Notables include: Kyle Larson 11th, Kurt Busch 12th, Jimmie Johnson 13th, AJ Allmendinger 15th, Joey Logano 16th, Tony Stewart 17th, Kevin Harvick 18th, Danica Patrick 22nd, Chase Elliott 24th, Austin Dillon 29th, and Ryan Blaney 35th.
