The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is on the West coast for their first true test of the 2016 season as they take on the 10 turn, 1.99 mile road course in Sonoma,California.
Kyle Larson, who is still looking for his first career Sprint Cup Series win in 91 career starts led the way in opening practice for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 with a speed of 75.299 seconds (95.141 MPH). Larson was .475 seconds ahead of his Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Jamie McMurray who was second.
2012 Sonoma winner Martin Truex Jr. was third followed by: Dale Earnhardt Jr. and 2014 Sonoma winner Carl Edwards rounding out the top five.
Aric Almirola, Danica Patrick, Michael McDowell, Brian Scott, and Joey Logano rounded out the top ten in the opening session of practice.
Notables include: Kurt Busch 11th, Matt Kenseth 13th, 2015 Sonoma winner Kyle Busch 14th, Jimmie Johnson 15th, Denny Hamlin 16th, Kevin Harvick 17th, Tony Stewart 18th, AJ Allmendinger 19th, Brad Keselowski 21st, Chase Elliott 22nd, Kasey Kahne 24th, Austin Dillon 29th, and Ryan Blaney 30th.
The Sprint Cup Series will return to the track at 6:30 P.M. ET for final practice ahead of tomorrow’s qualifying session. Final practice can be seen on FOX Sports 1.
