TRENTON, Ont. (June 27, 2016) – Charlie Sandercock had a near perfect weekend as he earned his first win of the season with the Go Nuclear Late Models Series on Saturday night at Brighton Speedway. He also earned a second-place finish one night earlier at Brewerton (NY) Speedway in RUSH Weekly Series competition.
Sandercock finished third in his heat at Brewerton and earned the second starting spot in the feature via the redraw. Sandercock battled early with Alan Fink before Kevan Cook took the lead. The race ran green to checkered without interruption and Cook’s lead was too big for Sandercock to make a big for the point.
“We like going to different racetracks and meeting new people. We haven’t been doing as much travelling this year. I had only been to Brewerton once when we finished third last year,” Sandercock said. “It was really racey with two lanes. I really enjoy everything about travelling to different racetracks, especially around the Syracuse area where we have a lot of friends.”
One night later, Sandercock pulled off a perfect night in round three of the Go Nuclear Late Model Series at Brighton. Sandercock set fast time in group two and was fastest overall in his Bellevue Fabricating/Deerhaven/Newham Enterprise No.57 with a lap of 14.173 seconds around the one-third mile oval. He followed it with a heat race win after starting fourth.
“Coming in to the night we made some changes to make the car better. We weren’t really sure what our heavy track setup was going to do. We went out for hot laps and the car worked well. We didn’t touch it again until feature time,” Sandercock explained.
The redraw did not go in Sandercock’s favour as he pulled the ninth starting spot, the lowest available to the top-nine qualifiers. It didn’t matter, however, as Sandercock took the lead from Brandon Mowat on lap 24 and never looked back. A lap 34 caution erased a five-second lead, but Sandercock was near flawless navigating lapped traffic and crossed the finish line three second ahead of his closest competitor.
“About halfway through the race, the car really started to come in. We picked our way through the field and got through lapped traffic and the rest was history,” Sandercock said. “I was on the bottom early in the race and then I made my way to the top side. Coming through lapped traffic I just had to go where I had to.”
Sandercock will face two more time trial events this weekend with Brighton’s Mid-Season Championships on Saturday and round four of the Go Nuclear Late Model Series at Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday, July 3.
“It’s nice to build some momentum going in to Cornwall. It will be just small tuning to make the car work well. I have to give hats off to by crew and all my sponsors. If it wasn’t for those guys, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do,” Sandercock said appreciatively.
“Sometimes we time trial well, sometimes we don’t. We were decent on Saturday night. We’re making sure we’re not over adjusting so we don’t get ourselves out of shape. We don’t really worry about whether there’s time trials or no time trials,” he added.
