BRIGHTON, Ont. (June 26, 2016) – A busy and action-packed night at Brighton Speedway saw 98 cars signed in to the pit area, including 21 cars for the Go Nuclear Late Model Series’ inaugural 50-lap Schools Out Shootout on Deerhaven Farm and Garden, Campbellford Chrysler and JJ Stewart Motors night.
Sandercock Earns Go Nuclear Win
Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Bellevue Fabricating) used a lap 24 pass in traffic to take the lead from Brandon Mowat (No.46 Target Fabrication) and led the second half of the race to earn his second late model win of the season at his home track on Saturday night.
“The car was working well. We’ve been tinkering on it for the last couple of weeks to get it where we want it. It worked a lot better tonight,” Sandercock commented following the win.
Caley Weese (No.77 Cool 100) and Mowat brought the 21-car field to the green flag in the 50-lap Schools Out Shootout event presented by Deerhaven Farm and Garden. Mowat jumped to the early lead, but a pair of cautions on laps two and six slowed the field.
The restart on lap six began a 28-lap green flag run where Mowat drove to the lead, but had company the entire time in the form of fourth-starting Steve Baldwin (No.5 Pro Advantage). The two drivers raced nose to tail for several laps as Sandercock began his charge through the field.
Sandercock stalked Baldwin until taking the runner-up position on lap 21 and three laps later passed Mowat on the backstretch to take the lead at the halfway point. From there, Sandercock drove away from the field, growing his lead to 5.1 seconds when the third and final yellow flag of the night waved on lap 34 when Greg Belyea (No.25 Excel Tower Service) spun off the end in turn three.
The restart gave Mowat and Baldwin their chance to reel in the point man, but they were no match for the Trenton native over the final 16 laps. Phil Potts (No.29 Vanderlaan Building Products) was the biggest beneficiary of the yellow flag, passing both Mowat and Bladwin over the final 16 laps to claim the second spot.
Dan Ferguson Scores Canadian Modified Triumph
Dan Ferguson (No.11 Kilmarnock Enterprise) shook the monkey off his back in round two of the ABC Taxi Triple Crown for the Bainer’s OilGARD Canadian Modifieds, winning for the second time this season.
Napanee’s Doug O’Blenis (No.32 John’s Car Care) and Dan Insley (No.28 Ball Machine) bought the 14-car field to the green flag. O’Blenis was chased early on by third-starting Shawn Gregory (No.1 CPS Wood Products). Neither driver could pull away from the other and close racing ensued until the only caution of the race on lap 18 when Gregory spun alone in turn two.
The restart put Ferguson to the outside of O’Blenis. The two raced side-by-side throughout the next two laps until Ferguson took the lead on lap 20 on the bottom of the racetrack down the backstretch. From there, Ferguson paced himself far enough ahead of point leader Andrew Hennessy (No.87 Custom Automotive), who took second from O’Blenis on lap 24, to earn his first win since April 30. Kraig Handley (No.91 Tri-Canadian Energy) completed the podium as O’Blenis settled for fourth.
Justin Ramsay Dominates For Fourth Win
Justin Ramsay (No.03 Empey Tire) made quick work of a talented Brighton Automotive Pro Stock field and led the final nine laps for his fourth win of the season.
Chris Dorland (No.14 Performance Sales & Accessories) and Rich Sanders (No.29 Orange Motorsports) brought the field to the green flag to start the 20-lap event. Sanders led early until Mike Freeman (No.51 Freeman Bus Lines) claimed the top spot on lap three, but didn’t make it back to the start-finish line before Jonah Mutton (No.39 Apex Graphics) raced out front.
Meanwhile, Ramsay had raced forward to second by lap eight and caught the leader Mutton at the halfway point. On lap 11, Ramsay took over the top spot and never looked back, despite a pair of cautions on laps 13 and 19 that erased his lead. Ramsay was flawless in a one-lap dash to the finish, as Doug Anderson (No.72 Morgan Brae Farms) passed Mutton for second. Brandon Murrell (No.19 Hannah Motors ) and Wade Purchase (No.53 Independent Alternator and Starter) completed the top-five.
Josh French Claims Second-Straight Comp 4 Feature
Josh French (No.08) assumed the lead on lap nine and held off a determined Josh Read (No.04 Down To Earth Landscaping) for six laps to claim his second-straight win in Bill’s Johns Comp 4 competition.
Polesitter Luke Toms (No.19 Diamond Detailing) led early, but was instantly pressured by Matthew French (No.13 Lava Clean). The two battled side-by-side for several laps including throughout a pair of restarts on laps five and six. On lap nine, however, the two drivers came together while racing for the lead in turn three resulting in both cars spinning off the track and the third yellow flag of the race.
Josh French inherited the point and ran alongside Read over the final five laps, until Tyler French (No.0 ABC Taxi) took the runner-up spot behind his brother on the final lap.
McCauley and Turgeon Take Stinger Features
Arthur McCauley (No.99 East Side Tire) survived a war of attrition and made an exciting last lap pass to become the third different winner in the Quinte Septic Stinger division. After leaders Rick Phillps (No.7 Dennis Davy Property Maintenance) and Del MacGregor (No.19 R Ward Construction) broke throughout the race, McCauley was in position to challenge Mark McDonald (No.28 Cannfiton Garage) for the top spot. On the final lap, the two drivers drag raced off the final corner with McCauley earning the win by less than a bumper.
In Junior Stinger competition, James Turgeon (No.87) outlasted the competition to earn his first win. Turgeon started sixth and took the lead on lap two when polesitter Dylan Lobe (No.7) suffered a flat right-front tire. Turgeon was challenged by Chantel Golden (No.5 Cannifton Garage), but was strong over the final 10 laps to earn the victory. Willy Bulten (No.50) was third.
