By Randy Spencer (Flamboro Speedway PR) – The OSCAAR Series made another visit to Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro SpeedwaySaturday and once again didn’t disappoint the big crowd in attendance. Threatening weather in the area but the rain missed us as it seemed to be raining all around. Racing got underway at 6pm with lots of action. The Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds and Ontario Pro Challenge series were also on hand as the regular Flamboro Speedway divisions had a night off. The night was filled with plenty of action and cautions seemed to breed cautions. Once the clouds cleared and night fell, I had to check if there was a full moon as it was an unusual night for cautions and carnage at the track.
The OSCAAR Modified driven by the Spider man John Harper had his car pretty much destroyed. A bunch of his crew and track personnel spent an hour after the races loading the car on backwards to his trailer. I wasn’t much help but was there just in case and nice to see so many people there to help out a good racer. A long time Flamboro competitor, John has had some bad luck lately, hope he gets the car rebuilt.
OSCAAR runs heats and these are the results. The OSCAAR Midgets, formerly known as the Hurricane Midgets, had heat wins go to James Stanley and Alex Cuzzilla. In heat one, James Stanley led lap one as six cars took green in this ten lap qualifier. As Stanley led, the battle was for the next two spots between Brian MacDonald and Wayne McKibbon. MacDonald took the inside lane down the back stretch a briefly took the lead before McKibbon took it back. Stanley was running away with McKibbon not too far back. MacDonald and Cuzzilla would continue to battle until the checkers flew for Stanley. In heat two seven cars took the green. Ryan Brown was the leader as the field completed one lap but Cuzzilla was the new leader the next time around. Cuzzilla was building a big lead as the next three cars were battling three wide for position. As the white flag flew, Cuzzilla had a big lead and the next two cars, Stanley and Brown were out on their own. The checkered flag flew with Cuzzilla taking the easy win. Seven cars also took the green for the fifteen lap main event. Brian MacDonald led early as McKibbon and Cuzzilla battled for second and third. Stanley made a move and looked like he was shot out of a gun as he headed into second on lap four. MacDonald and Stanley broke away from the rest of the pack and were nose to tail. Stanley would take the lead heading into three on lap ten and wouldn’t relinquish it and picked up his second straight feature win.
The new division, the OSCAAR Pro Midgets had heat wins go to four different drivers, Shawn Paul, Wally Northcott, Ted Greenwood and Jordan Hanna. Nice to see this division grow since their last Flamboro appearance when they had just three cars. Now up to 9. Some great racing, full out through the corners makes it very exciting. In the heats, the nine cars were divided into heats. Ted Greenwood led lap one but would soon start to battle Jordan Hanna. A three car battle developed as Shawn Paul entered the picture. Paul went high and took over second place. What a great battle as these guys battled nose to tail and “door to door”. Greenwood was better in the corners and Paul better on the straightaways. On lap seven, coming out of four, Paul made a great move to take the lead and picked up the win. In heat two, four cars took the green. To close to call as Wally Northcott and Glen Baker came across even on lap one. Northcott would lead lap two and move way out in front and would win heat two. Heat three win went to Ted Greenwood as he and Shawn Paul were the only two finishers. Heat four saw Jordan Hanna lead early. A nice side by side battle between Josh Ackworth and Wally Northcott was developing. Northcott got by Ackworth with three laps to go but couldn’t catch Hanna as he took the checkered flag. In the fifteen lap feature, eight cars took the green. Northcott was leading but went high in two and Hanna and Greenwood got by. Greenwood and Hanna battled and would build a half track lead on the rest of the field. Greenwood would start to put some room between himself and Hanna and Northcott would catch Hanna to take over second but could not catch Greenwood who picked up the feature win and all three celebrated in the Sunoco Fuels Victory Lane.
The OSCAAR Modifieds had heat wins go to four different drivers as well, John Harper, Luke Gignac, A.J. Emms and Chris Milwain. In heat one, six cars would go ten laps. The Spider man John Harper led lap one with A.J. Emms right on his bumper. The two broke away from the pack. Harper came across first to win race one. Heat two, Luke Gignac led early. Gignac and Gary McLean raced a good clean race and put some room between themselves and the rest of the pack. Gignac held off the champion to pickup the heat win. Heat three saw Dan Price lead lap one but he went high out of four on lap two and that allowed A.J. Emms to get by to take the lead. Price got shuffled to the outside and Harper got by and Price was quickly back to fifth. The checkers flew on A.J. Emms. The final heat saw Corey Horner lead lap one. A few cautions would bring the field back to even and on the final restart Chris Milwain took the lead and would win heat four. The feature race got off to a bad start. As the field came out of four to take the green, it looked as though the 21 of Chris Milwain got a little high and sent the 79 of John Harper into the wall had pretty much destroying the front end of that car. Unfortunate that they just did a lot of front end work to that car this week to get it ready. Harper was understandably very upset and didn’t hold back on the 21 as he quickly exited the car to voice his displeasure. The 47 of Brian McLean also went off on the flat bed as he had no where to go and was off with significant damage. When the race resumed it was the 8 of defending champion Gary McLean taking the lead. McLean, Luke Gignac and A.J. Emms broke away from the rest of the filed, a half track at one point. On lap twenty of twenty five, lapped traffic started to come into play. But in the end it was Gary McLean holding off the field to take the feature win. Always a favorite, McLean seemed to be running a little rough in hot laps but what ever it was, he got it figured out.
The Super Late Models had four heat races as well. J.R. Fitzpatrick lined up beside Shane Maginnis in heat one. Both were chomping and Maginnis had an itchy foot as he jumped the original start as he had to wait for Fitzpatrick to set the pace. Fitzpatrick led lap one and Mafginnis went in real deep and almost took the lead but was denied. The two broke away from the pack and as the checkers flew it was J.R. coming across first. Heat two, Gary Passer led early. Derrick Tiemersma got by Roy Passer the next lap to take over second spot. As the checkers flew on this one it was Gary Passer picking up the win. Heat three, Glenn Watson started pole and led early. He built a big lead and wouldn’t be seriously challenged in this one picking up the win. The final heat, Charlie Gallant was on the pole. He was quickly shuttled back to third as they came across to complete lap one with Tiemersma the leader. It was short lived as Shane Maginnis got by to take the lead on lap five with a pass down the back stretch. Roy Passer would get by Maginnis and pick up the win. The OSCAAR Super Late Models, the ground pounders, would be a battle of the titans in their 50 lap feature event. Last time out the 03 of Shane Maginnis made his first start of the 2016 campaign. J.R. Fitzpatrick won the first race here back in May and was the odds on favorite to repeat their last time in. But Maginnis ran away from the field that night to pick up the win. Maginnis and Fitzpatrick lined up third and fourth in the field for this one and made their way to the front quick. But some early trouble for Maginnis as he started to slow and smoke and he retired to the pits early on. That gave the lead to Fitzpatrick and he would hold onto it through several restart challenges from Todd Campbell and Roy Passer and Fitzpatrick would pad his points lead over Passer with a great piece of driving on the way to another win.
The Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds, always my personal favorite, are celebrating their 50th year of operation in 2016. When at Flamboro they race double features like our home track divisions. Quite a shame to see veteran Brian Atkinson’s car receive so much damage and unable to continue for the night. Atkinson who has raced at Flamboro since the 1980’s sits third in points, just 16 points back of leader Jason Keen. This set back will definitely put him behind the eight ball in his quest for the championship. Two twenty lap features were run and checkered flags went to Steve Trendell and Keen. Keen and Trendell flip flopped the other feature each finishing second in the feature they didn’t win. So that will put distance between the two as Keen went into the night leading Trendell by nine points and Atkinson by sixteen. Feature one saw three wide into three with John Karley, Ian Burney and Jason Keen battling. Atkinson and Burney got together and Atkinson was up on the wall and was too damaged to continue. Karley was around the next lap and Jason Keen was shown the black and was sent to the rear of the field. Steve Trendell had a half track lead and won handily. Feature two, Karley led early but Trendell and Keen got by him on lap two. Keen got out to a big lead, with Trendell next and he also had a big lead over the third place car. Keen would take the checkers in this one.
The Ontario Pro Challenge had fourteen cars signed in. They ran 4 qualifiers with wins going to, you guessed it, four different drivers. Peter Hattin, Tim Norris, Tim Shanahan and Kyle Batty. The thirty lap feature event was a long and carnage filled affair. Felt bad for their race director Gary Shortt who was standing beside me in the booth. Tim Shanahan led lap one. Mike Westwood got by Shanahan to take the lead on lap seven. and built a ten car lead. A caution on lap 21 as the 68 of Michael Johnston made hard contact with the back stretch wall. Lap 24, Patrick Freel and Tim Norris got together and Freel spun Norris. The 33 of Bryan Stevanus couldn’t avoid and he was done for the night, off on the flat bed. On the restart it was Kyle Batty taking the lead. With tow laps remaining, I go back to my full moon comment earlier, this was a weird affair. Lots of beating on each other in this one and the 8 of Peter Hattin’s car went off on the flat bed after taking a very hard hit into the wall down the back stretch. The parts were strewn over a wide area and the car was a mess. Patrick Freel and Tim Norris continued their heated on track rivalry throughout and Freel was disqualified for getting into Hattin ending his night. As the checkers flew it was Kyle Batty edging out Mike Westwood by a car length to win his third consecutive feature and going in Batty trailed points leader Tim Norris by a slim six points so this win should vault him into the lead.
That brought to a close another exciting night of racing action at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway. Make plans to join us next Saturdaynight, July16th as our home track divisions make a return. The Ray’s Towing & Auto Centre Thunder Cars are joined by the Flamboro Stadium & Speedway Pure Stocks, the Klotz Auto Repair & Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks, the Pro Four Modifieds and a return visit by the Ontario Modifieds. And last week everyone really enjoyed the King of the Hill at intermission and the Demolition Derby at the end of the night so we will be having both again this Saturday. Our announcer Gary Colling made it a great show last week riding and announcing from some of the cars in the event. This time he will be in car again, maybe even a trunk of one of the cars and it sounds like track co-owner Frank Casale will have a little something for Gary. Join us to see what it is!!
