Four time Indianapolis winner Jimmie Johnson put the field on notice during the opening practice session for the Crown Royal Presents The Combat Wounded Coalition 400 at The Brickyard.
The six-time Sprint Cup Series champion piloted his No.48 Lowe’s Red Vest Chevrolet around the 2.5 mile oval in a time of 48.864 seconds (184.185 MPH). Johnson’s time was .434 seconds ahead of second place Denny Hamlin.
Casey Mears was third followed by Kevin Harvick and Ryan Newman.
Carl Edwards, Chase Elliott, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, and Martin Truex Jr. rounded out the top ten on the speed charts.
Notables include: Kasey Kahne 11th, Kyle Busch 12th, Matt Kenseth 13th, Brad Keselowski 14th, Kyle Larson 17th, Joey Logano 19th, Ryan Blaney 21st, Greg Biffle 22nd, Austin Dillon 23rd, and Kurt Busch 24th.
