Racing in the top-10 throughout the entire 75-lap feature, Rick Spencer-Walt picked up a third place finish in the Saugeen Shores Transmission Late Model Invitational at Sauble Speedway this past Sunday.
Starting from the seventh starting spot, Spencer-Walt was set to gain ground early when he’d have contact on the opening lap with a fellow competitor. He’d escape without any damage, despite a trip through the infield grass, though was bumped back to the 10th position. Restarting from there, he quickly began to make ground, moving up to seventh by Lap 10. He’d fall back to eighth after being passed by Nick Goetz at Lap 17, though was able to get back by him to return to seventh following a Lap 26 restart. The battle continued, with Goetz getting back alongside Spencer-Walt for seventh at Lap 37, completing the pass at Lap 43 and bringing Jr Farrelly through with him to bump Spencer-Walt back to ninth.
Spencer-Walt held his ground through the middle portion of the race, though was quickly able to gain a pair of spots at Lap 57 when the pair of leaders took each other out. Running in seventh, he’d escape an incident on the restart ahead of him to move up a couple more spots, followed by passing Tom Gibbons under caution when he had a problem. Once the field went back to green, Spencer-Walt was now all the way up to the fifth spot.
With 14 laps to go, the flagman flew the white flag for the leaders as they came across the stripe. Coming around turns one and two, contact was made between the pair of leaders, resulting in Josh Stade climbing the backstretch wall. Spencer-Walt was able to escape the crash, passing both involved cars to move up to the third spot. Ultimately, the race was called at that point due to damage to the backstretch fence.
The top-five just adds to the numbers this year for Walt Motorsports as in eight races this season (five at Peterborough, two at Sunset, one at Sauble), Spencer-Walt has now posted four wins and eight top-five finishes. Notably, the highlight of the year thus far being the victory at the Chase for the Colours, which will allow him to lead the field to the green at the Autumn Colours Classic in October.
