The Southeast Super Truck Series will be invading the high banked fast speedway Newport Speedway in Newport, TN this Saturday night. This facility has been known to produce fast, side by side racing. Several of the series drivers have won before in other divisions, so a lot of the drivers definitely know their way around the track.
The last time the Super Trucks visited here, of course the “R” (Rain) word made its first appearance, but the track and SEST officials worked hard to get the track back in shape to race. It may have been a late start but for those whom stuck around, enjoyed a great race. It was Lee Tissot that walked away with the trophy and the check. And for the Southeast Super Stocks, Scott Franklin endured the stiff competition and came home with the win. Not to mention, SEST founder and owner Jeff Myers grabbed the victory in the always favorite Carolina Vintage Series, and Mini Cup veteran Lee Gibson claimed the title for the Mini Cups.
The Super Trucks points battle is even more closer than the last time out with Matt Leicht claiming his second win of the year last race, and Ricky Bowers having consecutive top-five finishes have left both just a mere few points behind Lee Tissot. Tissot is only five points ahead of Matt Leicht, while Bowers sits in third trailing only six points out of the lead. Fourth place contender older brother Kevin Leicht is only 11 points from Tissot so he is not out of the Championship hunt yet. Sitting back in fifth is series veteran Ed Surrett, just behind 14 points from taking home the hardware at the end of the year. Its going to be anyone’s game going into this weekend.
The Southeast Super Stocks points leader is Jason Leatherwood, but young Sawyer Frady is gaining quick on him, only 11 points back in second. Those two drivers have pulled away in the points battle. The Rookie of the Year battle although is shaping up to be great as John Gallman is eight points ahead of his contender Spencer Childers. Both those drivers are very talented and have matured over the year and progressed tremendously.
In the Mini Cup division its veteran driver Lee Gibson who sits atop the battle with a six point lead over Anthony Price. Between the two of them, they have claimed the victory’s just about every track the series visits. The Carolina Vintage Series is also shaping up in the points as Danny Toney has a 19 point lead over second place Phil Terry. Johnnie O’Neal, who sits back in third in the points, has claimed a few victories himself this season so its possible he may have a chance to take over the top spot.
Joining the Southeast Super Trucks Series this weekend at Newport Speedway is the Pure 4 division. So there will be five divisions running – Southeast Super Trucks, Southeast Super Stocks, Mini Cup, Carolina Vintage Series, and Pure 4s. Gates open at 4, Qualifying starts at 5, and green flag drops at 7. So come on out and enjoy some great racing.
