The Southeast Super Stocks came screaming into Newport Speedway August 13. It has been a battle between Jason Leatherwood and Sawyer Frady this year, with rookies John Gallman and Spencer Childers improving each and every week.
Tyler Worley was fastest in the first two rounds of practice that morning in the beautiful Great Smokey Mountains. However as final practice rolled around, it was Scott Franklin who climbed his way to the top of the charts.
Next up was qualifying for the drivers as they each took their five scuff laps and came into the pits to make a last minute adjustment and tape up the grills. As the drivers each took their times around the blistering fast high banked 4/10th mile speedway, it was Franklin setting fast time for the SESS. Franklin rolled a “4” on the invert dice now placing Worley pole to start the race with Leatherwood starting outside pole.
As Worley led the field to the green flag, he quickly stretched out the lead. By Lap 10 of the race, Franklin had worked his way to the back bumper of Worley and began to pull up beside of him before finally taking over the top spot. Franklin then went on to pull away to a tremendously good sized lead and captured the victory followed by Leatherwood in second and Clint Watkins in third.
