James Hinchcliffe had a pretty decent run going during the IndyCar Grand Prix of Watkins Glen before a pesky miscalculation cost him everything.
The Canadian driver of the No.5 Arrow Honda ran in the top-five pretty much the whole race, but ended up running out of fuel on the last lap. Notably, he was running second when he ran out of the fuel. He didn’t even have enough fuel to cross the finish line and had to catch a ride on fellow driver Sebastien Bourdias’ car back to pit road.
It seemed like an insult to an already stinging injury as following the Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway, Hinch and the No.5 team received a penalty from IndyCar for failing post-race inspection. Hinch dominated at Texas, though fell short on the last lap by inches, ending up in the second position. With the deducted points from the penalty, it took him out of contention for the championship.
“It was a frustrating end to a frustrating weekend,” Hinchcliffe quoted. “I was meeting fuel numbers during the last stint and I could easily have saved more at the end, but I lost the radio on the last lap. I was just cruising because I didn’t know if I needed to save more or not. Either way, I have to give credit to the No. 5 Arrow Electronics crew because the pit stops were on point today and they did what they needed to do. The car had the speed all weekend and hopefully we’ll be able to carry that over to Sonoma.”
