BRIGHTON, Ont. – September 20, 2016 – Phil Potts travelled east last weekend for a pair of dates at Mohawk International Raceway in Hogansburg, NY with the Go Nuclear Late Model Series. The Brighton, Ont. driver came away with two top-five finishes and a fast time award.
“It was good. I would like to have done better of course, but you take what you can get. Everybody was fast and it was a fast track,” Potts said. “It was probably the fastest I’ve ever seen that track stay through the night. I was running pretty much on the floor the whole time.”
Friday night Potts timed first in his group, which led to a third-place finish in his heat. He went on to finish fifth in the main event.
“The Friday night we were just a little loose in. It came on at the end, but it was a battle all night. We were up there, but we weren’t in win contention. Friday night we probably deserved a top-three,” Potts explained.
On Saturday, the Go Nuclear Series raced to beat the weather in the 4th annual Richard Tenace Memorial. Potts was second fastest in time trials and earned another third-place finish in his heat. Ultimately he was fifth again in the 40-lap main.
“I was kind of over driving the car a bit Saturday night too. I was reeling in Kyle (Sopaz) a bit, so I was over driving the car in the corner,” Potts explained.
“The Rocket was not happy playing in the slick at all. It was a great car for the time trials and heat races, it just wasn’t a feature winning car. I appreciate my crew coming and working their butts off to help me out.”
Potts and his team have now turned their attention to final preparations for Friday night’s championship finale in the Vanderlaan Building Products Pro Late Model division at Brighton.
“The car is ready to go for Friday night. We just have to grind some tires. The Longhorn is washed and ready to go,” Potts said.
He enters the championship race 45 points ahead of Charlie Sandercock for the track title. Potts admits he has some butterflies ahead of the race.
“The driver still needs a little preparation to concentrate on Friday night. I’m a little more nervous than I though I would be,” he explained. “I’m a little wound up because I’ve always been the chaser, never the guy going in to the final night with the lead. We’ll figure it out.”
Friday’s championship showdown is followed by the $6,000 to win Go Nuclear Late Model Series Great Crate Race at Brighton on Saturday, September 24. Event details are available atwww.brightonspeedway.ca.
