BRIGHTON, Ont. – October 3, 2016 – Phil Potts made his final trip south of the border with the Go Nuclear Late Model Seriesto Fulton Speedway on Friday night. Potts came away with a fifth-place finish in the Pit Stop Convenience Stores 50.
The night started with a second-place time trial effort in his group and a runner-up result in his heat. Potts started on the pole for the 50-lap main event and initially traded the lead with Mike Maresca over the opening five laps until Fulton track champion Chris Fleming assumed the lead.
“It was good right off the hop, but it was a little tight. That was the first time in a long time I’ve run on that banked a track. It was different,” Potts explained.
“I made adjustments for the feature and I did them wrong. I fought it all night. It was good for five laps until somebody else started winding up on the outside. I had no side bite and I couldn’t move off the bottom of the track.”
Potts fell outside the top-five momentarily in his Vanderlaan/Brighton Recycling/Indewey Excavating No.29, but raced his way back to fifth over the final 10 laps. It was Potts’ 22nd top-five in 27 starts this season.
“I was better in three and four. In turn one and two I was starting to turn too soon and it was no good to me. It’s a funny place. The track transitions from the banked to the flat so quickly,” Potts said. “It’s a tough place to get ahold of.”
While Potts would have liked to win from the pole, he’s still satisfied with the run. He hopes it will lead him to a strong run in the final series race of the season at the 1000 Islands RV Centre Fall Nationals at Brockville Ontario Speedway on Friday, October 14.
“I had a real good time. I enjoyed the track and racing with the Go Nuclear Series. I’m looking forward to Brockville already. I love racing Brockville. I know it’s going to be cold, but I still really enjoy it,” Potts said.
“I have to thank my crew as always. We all have to thank (car owner) Stuart Archer for letting us take the car without him even being there and trusting us to take all his equipment and go play.”
