SAUBLE BEACH, Ont. – October 13, 2016 – Andrew Gresel is confident entering this weekend’s Frostfest at Flamboro Speedway after earning his 10th top-five finish of the season during the Autumn Colours Classic at Peterborough Speedway last Sunday.
Gresel’s entry in the 116-lap feature at Autumn Colours marks the longest race he competed in this year. He earned a fourth-place finish against a talented field over the course of the long weekend of racing. The top-five finish was a strong run for Gresel, who didn’t have any major expectations entering the event.
He started the weekend with a win and sixth-place finish in two heat races.
“It was really good the first two days in the heats,” Gresel said. “We got lots of practice in to make it better, but it was good so we figured we would leave it alone and enjoy our weekend.”
The 2016 APC United Late Model Series champion lined up ninth for the main event, which had a lightning-quick pace.
“It was a fast-paced race. There was no real happy medium to it,” Gresel said. “It was a long race. It felt really long even though we didn’t get many cautions. There were a couple long green flag runs.”
Gresel raced his way up to the top-five and had a strong, clean run to earn a fourth-place finish. Walking away from Peterborough’s high-intensity Autumn Colours event in one piece and with a top-five result is an accomplishment, Gresel said.
“All in all it was a good day. We didn’t wreck and we didn’t get spun out. It was a good clean race,” Gresel explained. “We were missing out on something small, but all in all it was still good. It was a top-five racecar.”
The weekend was also an excellent chance for Gresel and his team to celebrate their accomplishments throughout the 2016 season.
“I think that was the best part of the weekend – going out and having fun. After winning the race for the APC championship on a Sunday, we never really got a chance to relax at the racetrack. Peterborough was good for that. Everybody was there and we just relaxed,” Gresel explained.
The team helped maintain their season-long momentum that will lead them to wrap-up their 2016 season at Flamboro Speedway’s Frostfest October 14-16. The triple 50-lap format for the Pro Late Models provides an interesting dynamic that Gresel is excited to tackle.
“It’s kind of nice running three 50-lap segments. It’s not like running a 100-lap race. They’re all out,” Gresel said. “Everybody wants to win the 50-lap segment. They’re more like 50-lap dashes. It makes it exciting.”
