The Chase for the Sprint Cup field will be reduced from 12 to eight after this weekend’s Hellmann’s 500 at Talladega.
Greg Biffle led the way in opening practice with a lap of 48.133 seconds (198.949 MPH). AJ Allmendinger was second with a best lap speed of 198.327 MPH.
Chris Buescher was third followed by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Trevor Bayne.
Michael McDowell, Brian Scott, Landon Cassill, Kevin Harvick, and Kyle Larson rounded out the top ten.
Notables include: Martin Truex Jr. 13th, Denny Hamlin 14th, Jimmie Johnson 15th, Matt Kenseth 16th, Kyle Busch 17th, Chase Elliott 21st, Brad Keselowski 23rd, Joey Logano 26th, Austin Dillon 27th, Kurt Busch 29th, and Carl Edwards 31st.
