The last two seasons have been less than stellar for Richard Petty Motorsports, but a strong run by Aric Almirola at Richmond International Raceway could help point RPM in the right direction.
Almirola scored his second top-10 finish of the year at Richmond after finishing in the ninth position. It was a much needed run for Almirola who only got one top-10 finish in all of 2016.
“It was a solid day for us. I am really proud of everybody on the Smithfield Ford Fusion here,” Almirola said post-race. “We had a good day. We needed that. We typically run well here. This is one of our better tracks. It is great to get a good solid finish here in Richmond, Virginia, Smithfield headquarters aren’t far away and we had a lot of friends and family of employees.”
Richard Petty Motorsports struggled as a whole in 2016, scoring only two top-10 finishes between Almirola and recently retired Brian Scott. Almirola and Scott both finished inside the top-10 at Talladega Superspeedway last fall. Now, Almirola will head back to Talladega next weekend looking for a similar result.
Almirola is currently 19th in points, and is only 12 points out of a playoff position.
