Johnny Sauter grabbed his first win of the 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season, but it didn’t come easy for the 39-year-old veteran as he had to hold off rookie teammate Kaz Grala for the win.
Grala, on 60 lap fresher tires than Sauter, was chasing down the defending series champion late in the race, but couldn’t quite make the pass. Using the advantage of clean air, Sauter was able to stay in front to win his 14th career Truck Series race.
In a race marred by varying pit strategies and several multi-vehicle crashes, only eight drivers finished on the lead lap, while nearly half didn’t see the checkered flag.
NASCAR K&N Pro Series West standout Todd Gilliland, who ran inside the top-five for much of his Truck Series debut, ended up finishing 20th after finding the wall late in the race. Gilliland had suspension damage, causing him to lose control of his No. 46 Pedigree Toyota.
