Chase Elliott finished second for the sixth time of his career in Sunday’s Bank of America 500. Elliott is a driver who probably puts more pressure and responsibility on himself than any other driver in the field.
After his strong second place run, many conversations and articles have pointed out how many second place finishes he has accumulated and how frustrated he must be over the fact he has not yet found victory lane.
Elliott has had great performance during his short career. Elliott has 71 starts in the Cup Series. During that time, he has compiled 34 top-tens. That equates to 47.9% top-ten percentage. There are many drivers in the series that would love to have those stats.
The second-generation driver from Dawsonville, GA has an average finish of 4.25 thanks to three second place finishes and an eleventh. He appears to be well on his way to securing a spot in the round of eight.
His legendary Father, Bill Elliott, took home runner-up honors eight times before securing his first win. The elder Elliott eventually visited victory lane 44 times , won one Cup Series championship and has also been inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
Harry Gant was another driver who became well known for finishing second. He did so ten times before finding his way to victory lane at 42 years of age. Gant went on to win 21 races in the Cup Series.
As one can see, the younger Elliott is in very good company. At a mere 21 years of age, Elliott has plenty of time to secure his place in the record books. Elliott has nothing to be frustrated about. Given his recent performance, it will not be long until we are counting how many victories Elliott has earned.
