GMS Racing announced Thursday that veteran NASCAR driver and 2016 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Johnny Sauter will race in Spencer Gallagher’s place in the NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Dover International Speedway.
NASCAR announced Gallagher’s indefinite suspension on Wednesday after a failed drug test. Gallagher will participate in NASCAR’s Road to Recovery program. How long the process will take Gallagher is unknown, but it usually takes at least two months to be reinstated.
Sauter, who drives for GMS Racing in the Truck Series, has three career XFINITY Series wins, the last of which came in 2005. His last XFINITY start was in 2014.
Sauter also leads the Truck Series point standings. He has one win this season in the opening race at Daytona International Speedway.
A replacement driver for the weeks to come after Dover has yet to be announced. The team says more details will be released at a later date.
