Takuma Sato’s weekend since getting to Toronto, Ont. has had him close to the top of the leaderboard, but in final practice before qualifying for the Honda Indy, he finally cracked the very top.
Sato posted the fastest lap in practice at 58.677 seconds, which also happened to be the fastest lap of the weekend recorded so far. Sato’s speed began showing on Friday when he was fourth in the opening practice session. In the second session he followed that up by recording the second quickest lap.
Josef Newgarden ran the second fastest lap of the session, but his speed didn’t come without controversy. In the final seconds of practice, he slid his No. 1 Verizon Chevrolet into the tire barriers in turn eight reacting to Robert Wickens, who also stuffed his No. 6 Lucas Oil Honda into the barriers.
Third in practice was Newgarden’s Team Penske teammate Will Power followed by Alexander Rossi and Spencer Pigot.
Scott Dixon, who was fastest in both first and second practice on Friday, was sixth in Saturday morning’s session. Wickens timed in seventh while Graham Rahal, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Ed Jones wound up eighth, ninth and 10th.
Hondas took eight of the top-10 spots in practice while Chevy drivers Newgarden and Power were second and third.
