As Verizon IndyCar Series rookie Robert Wickens continues to recover in hospital from injuries sustained in a race at Pocono Raceway, his team is deciding to forego from entering the No. 6 Lucas Oil Honda in the series’ next race at Gateway Motorsports Park.
The team confirmed that James Hinchcliffe, Wickens’ Canadian teammate also involved in the accident injuring Wickens, has been cleared to drive and will race at Gateway while the No. 6 car remains stagnant.
“James Hinchcliffe, driver of the #5 Arrow Electronics Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda, who has been cleared to drive following an accident at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, Aug. 19, will compete in the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at Gateway Motorsports Park this weekend,” the statement from SPM read. “The No. 6 Lucas Oil SPM Honda will not be entered for the event.”
It’s unclear yet whether the team will field the No. 6 with a replacement driver in the series’ final two events at Portland International Raceway or Sonoma Raceway.
