SOUTH BOSTON, Va. (January 22, 2019) – Trey Crews is a two-time Limited Sportsman champion at South Boston Speedway. Last season he won eight races in 12 starts on the way to his second title. And he’s accomplished all of that on a minimal budget.
Those championships prove, Crews says, is it doesn’t take unlimited resources to win in South Boston Speedway’s Limited Division. The track, he says, provides a level playing field for the division, not allowing well-heeled teams to outspend others to achieve performance.
“I don’t have a big budget to go racing and I’m still able to have fun, win races and still be able to afford it,” said Crews. “That’s one of the biggest reasons I go to South Boston. It means a lot to me that they allow us to do this the way they do.”
“It’s important to everyone, teams, fans and the track to keep things as affordable as possible,” said South Boston Speedway General Manager Cathy Rice. “That’s why we went to the one-tire rule several years ago. It makes it easier for competitors to race with us week-in and week-out.”
The secret to his success, and the success of the division, Crews says is two-fold: a one-tire rule and an already good purse that has been increased for the 2019 season.
Limited Sportsman teams can purchase only one tire a race, which has trimmed race-night costs considerably.
“It’s really amazing, just the amount of money you can save each week with the tire rule,” said Crews. “They pay tremendously well and with the one-tire rule you can go out and have fun, race and still afford it. It means a lot for under-budgeted teams like me. You are able to go over there, and everybody is equal. It’s a lot of fun.”
Teams will be allowed to purchase four tires for the season-opener on March 16 but only one tire per race until the 75-lapper on June 29 when they can purchase four tires. From then through the end of the season, it will be one tire per race.
In another move to even the competition and make the division more affordable, track officials earlier announced the addition of four new engine combinations in the Limited Division in an effort to give competitors more affordable options.
The engine combination the division has utilized for years will remain an option in 2019, with add-ons to make it competitive with the four new engines.
The 2019 South Boston season opens on March 16 with an afternoon of racing featuring twin 100-lap Late Model races, a 50-lap Limited Sportsman race, a 30-lap Pure Stock race and a 15-lap Hornets race.
