Kasey Kahne would lead the first practice session on Saturday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Kobalt Tools 400, while Martin Truex Jr. would lead the second practice session.
Kahne topped the first session with a lap of 28.708 seconds in his No. 5 Farmer’s Insurance Chevrolet. Kahne will start the race from the fourth position after qualifying was rained out and set by last year’s owner’s points. He has two top fives and four top 10s in nine starts on the 1.5 mile oval.
Greg Biffle was second, 0.042 seconds off of Kahne. Kyle Busch was third, followed by Kevin Harvick and last week’s race winner Carl Edwards. Denny Hamlin was sixth, followed by rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr., points leader Jimmie Johnson, Martin Truex Jr. and Joey Logano.
In the final practice, Truex Jr. would top the charts with a lap of 28.665 seconds in his No. 56 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota. Truex Jr. will start the race from the 11th position and has only one top 10 in seven starts at Las Vegas.
Edwards was second, 0.211 seconds off of Truex Jr. Kyle Busch was third, followed by Johnson and Mark Martin. Clint Bowyer was sixth, followed by Earnhardt Jr., Kahne, Paul Menard, and Greg Biffle.
Pole sitter Brad Keselowski was 21st in the Happy Hour session.
Denny Hamlin would go for a spin during the session, however was able to keep it off the wall. He will start the race sixth after being 16th fastest in happy hour.
