(Grand Bend ON) Five divisions took to the speedway for opening night under gorgeous blue skies and raced into a picture perfect evening that was capped off by some exciting racing.
Jaxon Aubertin used patience and picked his way through a mid way incident to score one in the win column for the OK Tire London South Jr. B Sprints.
Not to be outdone, older brother Cooper Aubertin dominated the Tommy’s Motors Jr. A Sprint Feature. Despite a late race restart, Aubertin held off a late challenge by defending division Champion Lucas Vieira.
Everyone loves a first time winner, and it was a very popular win by Cambridge driver Brayden Dupuy in the Broadway Services Junior Late Models. Fans were left on the edges of their seats as Hayden Sim stocked Dupuy in the final laps. Sim, who had struggled earlier in the day with an ill handling racecar, managed to find some speed in the second half of the race and worked as hard as he could to catch Dupuy. Despite his best efforts, Dupuy was able to take his first feature win.
Mike Beneteau picked up where he left off in 2013 by winning the Mike & Terri’s NoFrills Mini Truck feature. All eyes however, were on the second place battle between the brothers Tanner and Cole Pirie. Cole Pirie, the younger of the two, was hounding older brother Tanner for 20 laps before being able to stick his nose to the inside and sneaking by. The gap between first and second was much too big for a lead challenge.
Sean McPherson, the lone American driver racing in Grand Bend, had a fantastic run in both Heat race and Feature race competition Saturday night. The Riley Michigan pilot was fast out of the trailer and was dominant throughout the evening. We saw the maiden voyage of 12 year old driver Jacob Sheridan in a Legend car. Sheridan looked smooth and battled to a fourth place finish in the final standings of the Auto Fusion Towing Can Am Legends of Grand Bend Speedway.
Racing continues Victoria Day Weekend for some extend lapped features and the first race of the new racing division, the London Drive Systems 4 Fun 4 Cylinders. Racing begins at 7:00pm with pit & spectator gates opening at 4:00pm. Follow us on Twitter @GBSUpdates, for full results visit our website at www.grandbendspeedway.com
