The second round of the Super Series will take to the track on Saturday night and it happens with a bang. Saturday night will mark the first “Fan Appreciaiton Night” of the season.
Now, what’s fan appreciation night you may ask? Simple – imagine Halloween, combined with getting autograph cards and photos with drivers. No wonder the kids go crazy for it, eh?
Though beyond the special festivities of the night, there’s a jam-packed night of racing to boot.

Last week, Chris Morrow picked up his second victory of the season, scoring the victory in the 50-lap feature in the first round of the Super Series. The 2014 Spring Derby 100 winner will look to back it up with another victory this year as Morrow is showing early in the season that he will be a championship favourite.
Midway through last week’s feature, Nick Goetz got caught up in a wreck on the backstretch. The wreck ultimately resulted in Goetz’s suffering a fractured left ankle. Despite the injury, Goetz will be racing this weekend.
“We’re not going to let this run of bad luck get us down”, Goetz said, per the press release by Spencer Lewis. “This car was great at the Spring Derby, and that’s what we’re hoping to get back to. We had a week of engine troubles and a week in which we were treated like a pinball, and now we’re looking to get past that”
“I hate it for my guys more than anything. They work awfully hard on this car and they deserve a strong run for their efforts. Graham [Annis] puts a lot of hours into this thing at the shop, and [Crew Chief] Brandon [Watson] made some awesome adjustments for me tonight. We just have to regroup from this. Onward and upward. We’ll be back next week even stronger”
Pre-season championship favourites Billy Zardo and Tom Walters will be looking to bounce back this weekend after suffering motor failures in last week’s events.
Super Stock
Last weekend, Lane Zardo broke through and swept the day with the perfect hat trick – a win in his heat, a win in the Dash for Cash and a win in the 30-lap feature. Zardo will be looking for his second straight victory this weekend as he tries to score points early in an effort for his second championship.
Randy Rusnell has come so close so early this year, but yet hasn’t made it to victory lane at the end of the feature. He finished second in the Spring Derby 50, and then finished second last weekend. ‘The Rocket’ is searching for his third straight championship after winning 11 of the 14 features in 2014.
So far this year, the Super Stocks have ran two features and had two different winners. Cayden Lapcevich won the Spring Derby and Zardo won last week. Could we go 3-for-3? Odds are in our favor. Rusnell will certainly be a favourite given his past success, however don’t count out Dan Archibald or Paul Geniole Jr. as both have shown speed early in the season.
Grand Landscaping Mini Stock
Miles Tyson finally broke through last weekend with his first career Mini Stock feature victory. Now where does he go from here? As they say, the sky is the limit as Tyson should contend for the feature victories and title all year long.
Brandon McFerran scored four feature victories last season. So far this year, he hasn’t scored one yet but he has been getting stronger with each passing week. Could McFerran become the fourth straight different Mini Stock feature victory winner?
The championship for the Mini Stock divison looks to be split in four as of right now based on early season performance with Tyson, McFerran, Spring Derby 35 winner Andy Kamrath and Warren Paxton. As the year goes on, will there be anybody else who steps it up to contend with those four?
Be sure to head to Sunset Speedway this weekend to take in all the action. Fan Appreciation festivities kick off at 5:45 p.m. EST with racing scheduled to start at 6:15 p.m. EST.
