Building on the momentum of an enthusiastic start, the Grassroots Racing Series at Kawartha Speedway is ready for the schedule’s second event Sunday, June 15th.
Derek Lynch, John Baker Jr., Tyler Junkin, Andrew Massey and Kevin Foisy have etched their names in the motorsports history books after claiming checkered flags in the Late Model, Thunder Car, Mini Stock, 4Fun and Ontario Legend divisions during the opening round of action. Series organizer and promoter Andrew McFadden says he was happy with the first show, but understands there is still some work to be done to build the Grassroots Racing brand.
“I was impressed with the on-track product and there was some solid feedback from the fans,” said McFadden. “It would be great to see a few more cars for each division in the pits and another family or 2 in the grandstands, but I don’t imagine that there is a promoter anywhere in the business who wouldn’t have the very same comments.”
McFadden says that as a new series, he and the Grassroots Racing team are working through this year’s 8 race schedule with a keen eye on what works and what doesn’t. The ultimate goal is to see the program expand for 2015 with a regularly scheduled day of racing; whether it be Kawartha’s traditional Friday night or the Sunday afternoon agenda that will be tested this weekend.
“The irony that we’re based at a facility that also hosts a casino hasn’t been lost on anyone,” admitted McFadden with a sly smile. “We’re rolling the dice and hoping to win the game every time we open the gates. I think we’re offering fans a sold program this summer and in addition to being the promoter, I’m also a fan.”
The Father’s Day Shootout Sunday, June 15th will include action for the Late Model, Thunder Car, Mini Stock, 4Fun and Ontario Legend race teams. Also on the program will be a demonstration by the Kawartha-Durham Kart Club and a special ‘Kawartha Call of the Wild’ open competition show, where the rulebook will be set-aside to allow creativity and imagination to take the forefront.
Pit gates will open at 10:00, with rotating on-track practice sessions starting at 11:00 and the day’s first green flag at 1:30. Full details can always be found by visiting www.kawarthaspeedway.com and clicking the ‘Grassroots Racing’ tab.
