BARRIE, ON- Fresh off a victory in Round 2 of the OSCAAR Super Late Model Tour at Kawartha Speedway, Andrew Gresel turned in another impressive performance on June 14th, capturing runner-up honours in Round 3 of the tour at Barrie Speedway.
The second-generation star brought the packed grandstand to its feet on more than one occasion, as he raced alongside Kevin Cornelius for the race lead.
When the smoke had cleared, and the five-star battle was through, Gresel stood to the right of Cornelius in victory lane, congratulating the fellow sophomore on an incredible performance.
“Races like that are why we spend the time and money that we do”, said Gresel post-race with a smile. “That was an absolute war. I’m usually not a huge fan of finishing second, but there’s no shame in losing to a guy like Kevin after a battle like that”
The pair raced side-by-side for the final 20-laps of the event, battling hard but clean for the point position.
“I can’t remember the last time I had to work that hard for second place”, admitted Gresel. “This is exactly the type of race you hope to see at a bullring like this”
“I think, too often, guys just try to run through one another at places like this. But, you don’t have to race that way. I think we proved that tonight. If you have respect, and use some give and take, you can put on one hell of a show at a speedway as tight as this”
Andrew Gresel will head into Round 4 of the tour on top of the point standings, as his Sauble Falls Racing Team continues to work towards their first career OSCAAR championship.
“As much as we love to win – that’s the whole reason we come to the speedway – we know that we have to keep the big picture in mind”, explained Gresel. “So, this was a great points weekend for us. We qualified well, we earned our third straight top-5 of the season and we’re walking out with the points lead. Hard to be angry with that”
Next up for the London Recreational Racing No. 81 will be the two-day Don Biederman Memorial event at Sunset Speedway on June 28th & 29th.
