Dale Shaw Picks Up Win in APC 100 At Flamboro Speedway

By Randy Spencer – Round Four of the APC Six-Pack Challenge for Flamboro/Delaware Late Models was the main event this past Saturday at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway.

Rain delayed the start of racing action but 17 eager Late Model drivers were raring and ready to go. The Thunder Cars had the night off after completing in the fourth round of their APC Six-Pack Challenge last night at Delaware Speedway. In their place, the Lucas Oil Can Am Midgets were on hand and were joined by the Ponderosa Nature Resort Pure Stocks, the Klotz Auto Repair & Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks and the Ponderosa Nature Resort Pro Four Modifieds.

The afternoon got underway with Time Trials for the Late Models. Veteran Gary Elliott led off with a time of 16.678. Six drivers later, Flamboro’s Dale Shaw set the fast time with a 15.611. Jamie Cox of Delaware Speedway would better that time with a 15.573 and would manage to hold on to that time and be the fast car on the night.

The Pure Stocks were up first for their heat race and was a barn burner from the drop of the green flag. Andy Wheller and Gillian Hils battled bumper to bumper and door to door for all ten laps. They would exchange the lead several times and were never more that a car length behind the other. As the checkered flag flew, Hils edged Wheller by a half car length. Mini Stock heat wins went to Russ Aicken and Mark Klotz. The Pro 4 Modified heat win went to veteran Bill Pearsall. The Can Am Midgets had twenty cars on hand and ran some exciting heats with wins going to Lucas Smith and Adrian Stahle. The B Feature win went to Chris Holman.

After a brief intermission, feature racing got underway with the Pure Stocks. Bill Rutherford and Andy Wheller were on the pole for this one and Wheller got out to a quick lead early. Once again, as in the heat, Gillian Hils tracked down Wheller and the two made a repeat of the race earlier in the evening. Battling once again for most of the 15 laps, neither driver was willing to give an inch. It came down to the final lap with the two drivers banging away and inching along side by side. Coming out of turn four, Hils seemed to bobble slightly and lost the momentum and Wheller managed to take the win by a car length.

Mini Stocks were up next with Jake Gilbert and Mark DaSilva on the pole. At the beginning of the night, Mike Holmes held a 24 point lead on Russ Aicken in the point standings. Aiken won his heat earlier with Holmes was second, so basically no change entering the feature. Aicken took up fifth in the starting order while Holmes, who was last weeks feature winner, started tail in 17th spot. Hudson Nagy led the first six laps but couldn’t hold off a hard charge by the veteran Aicken. The New Hamburg resident was out front with Holmes on his bumper throughout. Holmes, who travels from London every week, seemed to bide his time as he got close several times. On the last lap, entering turns 3-4, Holmes made his move and got around Aicken to take the checkered flag for yet another exciting Mini Stock feature finish. The Late Models were next and they lined up on the front straight for driver introductions. A dice roll of 9 meant an inversion so that put rookie Matt Lockwood on the pole with Nick Roth along side. As the green flag flew, a spin by Al Bowman brought out a caution and complete restart. Lockwood was putting on a clinic early building a fairly big lead early and would hold it until a caution on lap 44 brought the field back to even. It was the Rookie vs Veteran as Lockwood was along side Robbie Thompson. The two battled hard and were even for several laps until they got tangled and both went around. The starter gave the #56 of Thompson the black flag so they both would head to the rear of the field. Mark Watson was the new leader and he held on for a few laps. On lap 47, current APC points leader Shawn Thompson got involved with Adam Quarrie and Doug Pokupec heading out of turn two. Dale Shaw and Matt Pritiko were battling Watson hard and as the cars
 reached half way, Shaw had taken over the lead followed closely by Pritiko, Watson, Jeff Ruddy and David Elliott. Shaw and Pritiko battled it out over the next thirty laps until lap 90 when a caution came out and tightened the field. Another caution one lap later when Lockwood and Pokupec got tangled. Lap 95 saw Ruddy and Robbie Thompson bring out a caution and another on the restart when Ruddy got involved with the other Thompson, Shawn…ending their night. Lap 97 saw the hood of David Elliott’s car start to flap and out came a caution. Elliott made a qucik pit stop to have it removed and he made it out for the restart. a green, white, checkered finish make it interesting as Dale Shaw held off Matt Pritiko for the checkered flag. Rick Burbridge came home third followed by Mark Watson and Nick Roth to complete the top five.

The Pro 4 Modifieds were on track for their 15 lap feature with Robert Mercer and Mike Westwood up front. Westwood got out to a big lead early and would hold it until his car retired to the pits with mechanical problems with Robert Mercer taking the lead. On lap 12, Mercer too seemed to have something go south on his car as he spun out and hit the turn one wall and his night was done. Craig Shaver and Bill Pearsall would battle for the rest of the race and Shaver, the current points leader in the Pro Four’s (Shaver 372-Pearsall 369) held off Pearsall to take the checkered flag.

The last race of the night was the 25 lap feature for the Can Am Midgets. Mack Deman, the current point leader at the start of the night was a car to watch as he had won the previous three features and four on the season. Todd Cresswell and Lucas Smith were on the pole for a field of 18 cars. The veteran Cresswell held the lead for the first 13 laps but an amazing pass by Smith heading into turns 3-4 and would build up a half straightaway lead and picked up his second feature win of the year. Deman came home third.

That brought to a close yet another exciting night of racing! Please make plans to join us this Saturday, August 2nd for another action packed and jammed packed night of racing. It’s the Annual KID’S Ride Night!!  Between 5pm and 6pm, for a donation of a toonie in support of the McMaster Childrens Hospital in Hamilton, your child will be taken for a spin on our 1/3 mile oval track in a race car, receive a McMaster happy face sticker and a ticket for a draw during intermission for gift cards and Flamboro hats. The Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds will be joined by our regular weekly divisions, the Grisdale Late Models, the Ray’s Auto Centre and Towing Thunder Cars, the Ponderosa Nature Resort Pure Stocks and the Klotz Auto Repair & Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks.

Pit gates open at 4pm, Grandstands at 5pm and green flag flies at 630pm. Kid’s Ride Night between 5pm and 6pm.
