By Randy Spencer – The Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series (presented by Meineke) made their third of four appearances at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway this past Saturday and Shawn McGlynn made it three in a row as he dominated the 100 lap feature race.
The night’s racing got underway with time trials for the LOSC. Jason Meyer set an early fast time, with a lap of 16.791. Chad McGlynn topped that when he turned a lap of 16.753. Dave Connelly did a little better going 16.671. Brennan Didero was third last to qualify and he went 16.462. Kevin Allen, second to last couldn’t do better than 16.618. Shawn McGlynn was the last car to qualify and eclipsed Didero by just .006 seconds to be the fastest car on the night. The remainder of the qualifying for other divisions was done through heat races. Andy Wheller and Shawn Taylor took wins in Pure Stocks, Hudson Nagy and Russ Aicken were victorious in the Mini Stocks, Shawn Chenoweth and Brad Collison picked up wins in Thunder Cars while Robert Mercer won the Pro 4 Modified qualifier.
During intermission, the LOSC ‘Fast Five’ draw changed the field. The top five qualifiers after time trials were Shawn McGlynn, Brennan Didero, Kevin Allen, Dave Connelly and Chad McGlynn. After the draw, the top five looked like this, Kevin Allen on the pole followed by Shawn McGlynn, Brennan Didero, Dave Connelly and Chad McGlynn.
Feature racing got underway with Pure Stocks first. Gillian Hils was last week’s feature winner. She went into the night trailing Shawn Taylor by six points. She had to start at the rear of the pack. Michael Kenny and Bill Rutherford were on the pole for this one. By lap four however, Hils had moved up to third place. Wheller and Taylor were able to hold her off and as the cars crossed the line, Wheller just edged Taylor and Hils came home third.
The Mini Stocks were up next for their 25 lap main event. Jake Gilbert and Hudson Nagy were out front and lead the field to green. The two top drivers in points, Russ Aiken started fourth with Mike Holmes in tenth. As the night started Holmes lead Aiken by 20 points. Aiken charged to the front and was leading by lap two. Holmes had moved to sixth and as Aiken was heading down the front stretch the tie rod in the #71 car broke ending Aiken’s night. Before long Holmes assumed the lead and held off the pack to pick up his ninth feature win of 2014.
Kevin Albers and Bobby Mercer were on the pole as the Thunder Cars took green for their feature. Albers got out to the lead and as the race wore on the starter gave the black flag to Shawn Arnott. Albers continued to lead the race until lap 22 when Shawn Chenoweth got by Albers to take the checkered flag and picked up his sixth straight feature win. However in post race inspection, Chenoweth was disqualified for the night.
The Pro 4 Modifieds were led onto the track by Robert Mercer and Dan Petit. Mercer who won the first feature way back on April 26th has had some bad luck lately with a DNF, a DNS and a DQ in his past three starts. Mercer got off to a great lead and managed to hold the lead through a couple of restarts and as the field headed to the checkers, Mercer held off Brian Nanticoke for his second feature win of the season.
The final race of the night was the 100 lap feature for the LOSC. A spin by Doug Cathcart on lap one bought the field back to a full restart. Shawn McGlynn took the lead on the start and built a big lead. As the race approached the half way mark without caution, McGlynn was dominating the race lapping many of his competitors. Kevin Allen was in second and battling Brennan Didero but a broken rear end in Allen’s car ended his night. A caution on lap 61 brought the field back to even but McGlynn would continue his dominance once again lapping most of the field and as the checkered flag flew it was McGlynn winning his third consecutive race.
