Saturday’s running of the Wahta Springs 300 at Barrie Speedway was event number 10 of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil1 2014 tour. Steckly had a strong run going early when during the middle stages of the race they suffered a parts failure that would put them behind the wall for repairs for several laps.
The 22 Racing/Canadian Tire/Sturdy Formed Concrete Dodge was strong right off the trailer on Saturday afternoon. Steckly was at the top of the charts for both practice sessions and qualified during time trials later in the afternoon in third.
Steckly would line up on the inside of the second row for the start of the Wahta Springs 300, knowing he had a car that could be competitive right from the drop of the green flag. “We knew we had a good car and that we could run up front all night. Our goal was to stay with the lead pack and make adjustments to the car as the night wore on to keep it competitive.”
The Canadian Tire/Sturdy Formed Concrete Dodge driver was running true to form and after a pit stop for fuel he was still running in the lead pack when just past the mid-point of the race the car stopped on the track. The 22 Racing crew quickly went to work to diagnose the problem and a parts failure in the rear gear was the culprit. The team made repairs but when Steckly returned to the track he was several laps down to the leaders. A disappointing 13th place finish was the result. “I knew we had a car that could run up front and compete for the win tonight,” said Steckly after the race. “I hate it for our fans – we had a lot of them here from my home town of Milverton and all of our sponsors, but we will bring another good car to Kawartha in a couple of weeks and go for the win again.”
The Wahta Springs 300 from Barrie Speedway will air Sat. Sept. 13th at 2 p.m. ET on TSN and Thurs. Sept. 25th at 8 p.m. on RDS2.
