McGregor Wins with Andrews Taking Double Pole
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (March 22, 2015) – Exclusive Autosport enjoyed an impressive outing at Road Atlanta in the weekend’s SCCA Majors race meeting, 21st-22nd March, with team veteran Thomas McGregor earning a win on Saturday while rookie driver Scott Andrews captured pole position for both F1600 starts at the famed Georgia circuit.
Saturday’s 16-lap sprint brought a team one-two with Canada’s McGregor heading home Australian team-mate Andrews at the checkered. Sunday’s 20-lap feature event, held in the rain, brought another double podium for Michael Duncalfe’s squad as Scott took second behind race winner Austin Mack with McGregor immediately behind in third.
The weekend started on a positive note in qualifying with Scott Andrews dialing himself into the team and the 2.54-mile Road Atlanta circuit for the first time. Piloting the No.93 Exclusive Autosport / Helmart / Autmobility PTY Ltd / Spectrum / Sparco / Honda Racing HPD entry, the Aussie racer wasted no time showcasing his pace and duly claimed pole position. McGregor, behind the wheel of the No.90 Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Dairy Queen / Exclusive Management Inc. / Honda Racing HPD entry was second fastest.
Saturday’s race proved to be an all Exclusive Autosport affair with the team’s drivers firmly in control of proceedings. The duo traded the lead several times battling in their Spectrum 014 chassis. Two-wide into the final turn on the final lap, it was Saskatoon’s McGregor who edged the run to the checkered over Andrews for the team one-two finish.
Andrews set the fastest lap of the race and in doing so won the pole for Sunday’s feature race while McGregor would start a row behind in third. The 20-lap race was declared a wet one thanks to the rain-soaked track. Scott impressed again, leading the majority of the race until being passed by eventual winner, Austin Mack, after the race’s sole full course caution period.
The Las Vegas-based Australian pushed hard to take his second successive second place podium finish while McGregor closely followed to take third and ensure another double podium appearance for Exclusive Autosport.
“This was a great weekend for the team,” enthused Exclusive Autosport owner Michael Duncalfe. “Scott made a fantastic debut with us. He showed his outright speed with two impressive pole positions and race finishes. I’ve got no doubt he’ll be a championship contender this year when we race in the F1600 Formula F Championship. He worked very well with Thomas who of course won Saturday’s race for us and continues to deliver for the team. We had a trickier time today in the feature race but both guys drove exceptionally well considering the conditions. I’m delighted with our performances.”
“I’m really happy with how our week turned out,” stated Saturday’s victor, Thomas McGregor. “First off it’s always great to get seat time but secondly we really learned a lot about the new Hoosier tire we’ll be running this season. We made a lot of progress and as always, the team worked exceptionally hard.
“The races were a lot of fun! It was great to get the win yesterday and a podium today. I really couldn’t see much due to the spray on the track this morning but I followed Scott’s rain light and brought the car home third. I enjoy racing at Road Atlanta, it’s a fun circuit and probably my second favourite after Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.”
“I think the weekend was definitely a good welcome to Exclusive Autosport,” stated team rookie, Scott Andrews. “It was my first time working with the team and racing at this track but thanks to everyone’s hard work we were fast straight off the back of the trailer. My pole position on Saturday was a surprise, especially knowing how fast Thomas is, and again to take it for today’s race was a bonus.
“I was confident in the wet and enjoyed leading but we couldn’t match Austin’s grip after the re-start given he was on the Pro tire and we were on the Club. That said, Thomas and I were the best of the race and we can definitely be happy with our driving.”
Both drivers will be in action for Exclusive Autosport as the team gets set to make its full-time debut in the US-based F1600 Formula F Championship which starts with Round 1 hosted at Road Atlanta, Friday 10th to Sunday 12th April.
